Therefore, it is the root of the Dharma. The Dharma that is spoken is also the nature of name, sentence, word, individual, and summary. Therefore, names and so on are taught. What is a name? It is the designation given to all defiled and purified dharmas as names of essence and difference. For example, all defilements are greed and so on. Purification is faith and so on. To those, greed is called greed, and faith is called faith, which are names designated as essence. Also, should greed be fully known? Should it be abandoned? These are names designated as difference. Likewise, should faith be cultivated? Should it be done repeatedly? These are names designated as difference, and that is a name. What is a sentence? Because it follows the meaning of all defiled and purified things that are conventionally established, the place of reliance and the reliance, that is, what relies on the collection of those names, is a sentence. For example, it is said: The greed of the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm should be abandoned. This is a collection of names. The collection of purified names should also be shown in the same way. For example, it is said: In relation to the actions and results of inanimate beings, faith is virtue and so on. What is a letter? It is the letter-syllable that is the basis of both of them. That which is the basis of name and sentence is the letter-syllable. This is the concluding statement. What is it to know each individually from each individually? It is to know each individually by focusing on non-confusion. This shows that the arrangement of names, sentences, and letters, and the statements of the Dharma such as the particularly excellent Sutra Pitaka, can each be definitely grasped. What is it to know each individually from the summary? It is to know each individually by focusing on confusion. This shows that the summarized Dharma such as the Sutra Pitaka is made into one and definitely grasped. How is it that a Bodhisattva who cultivates calm abiding and insight knows each Dharma individually?

Therefore, in order to explain in how many ways one can correctly understand various things, Bodhisattvas correctly understand various things in ten ways, such as "how many exist" etc., which are widely proclaimed. Maitreya, for all the defiled and purified dharmas, the ultimate end of complete distinction is how many exist. For defilements, such as desire etc.; for purification, such as faith etc. The defiled and purified dharmas, how many are their numbers, the ultimate end of completely distinguishing these numbers, is how many exist. As in "for example" etc., for the aggregates, the five aggregates can contain the defiled and purified aggregates without omission. The six internal sense bases reveal the profound. The six external sense bases reveal the enjoyer, etc. The so-called "etc." should also include what is summarized by the five senses etc. "How many exist" refers to, through how many dharmas can defilement or purification exist, this itself is how many exist. Maitreya, what is the suchness of the defiled and purified dharmas themselves, that is the reality of existence itself. This shows that for the defiled and purified dharmas, in the case of analysis, existing truthfully and without inversion, this itself is the reality of existence itself. And "that is also seven ways" further reveals the distinction. The so-called "arising suchness" refers to the state of entering through the continuation of afflictions, karma, and birth is arising. The so-called "suchness" refers to being different from that state, revealing the non-inverted nature. The so-called "the beginningless and endless of formations" refers to revealing the emptiness of the past and future limits. The so-called "the suchness of characteristics"

Now, concerning what is meant by 'the absence of self in persons and the absence of self in all phenomena,' the term 'all phenomena' refers to conditioned and unconditioned phenomena. Among these, for the conditioned phenomena, there is no self of a person in each individual atom and in all minds and mental factors. In the unconditioned, there is also no self of a person in space and in cessation through discrimination, as well as in cessation not through discrimination. Therefore, the characteristic of phenomena is the absence of self in persons. 'The suchness of mere consciousness is the mere consciousness of the aggregates' means that internal and external objects are completely distinguished only through mere consciousness. 'The suchness of abiding is what I have shown as the truth of suffering' means that abiding refers to ownerless phenomena abiding in time and so forth. All of these are truly suffering for the noble ones because they are discordant. 'The suchness of perverted establishment is what I have shown as the truth of origination' means that perverted establishment is the nature of being deluded into thinking of self in what is without self, and so forth, and therefore it is the cause of manifest establishment and the suffering of birth. 'The suchness of complete purity is what I have shown as the truth of cessation' means that it is pure because the untrue conceptualization suddenly ceases. 'The suchness of correct establishment is what I have shown as the truth of the path' means that correct establishment is the antidote to perverted establishment, and therefore it is the pure path that pacifies delusion into thinking of self and so forth. Maitreya, from 'to that' and so forth, shows the manner of the distinctions of those suchnesses. From 'what is the suchness of arising' and so forth, it is extensively explained that because all sentient beings have increased the habitual tendencies of viewing the transitory collection as a self, through the suchness of arising and so forth, it is shown that 'they are the same and equal.' 'What is the suchness of characteristics and what is the suchness of mere consciousness, all phenomena are the same and equal' means that all phenomena are the characteristic of the absence of self in persons.
