It is said that it arises from the cause of pure view arising from hearing and thinking, that is, the view arising from hearing and thinking will become pure. In order to ask about the cause of calm abiding and insight, the result is sought. World Honored One, what are the results of those? The mind being extremely pure is the result, and wisdom being extremely pure is the result. Therefore, it shows that the result is the mind being extremely liberated and wisdom being extremely liberated. Also, because compassion and so on are widely spoken, the result of calm abiding and insight is determined. In order to ask about karma, it is asked what karma is. It is said that compassion can liberate from two kinds of bondage. Then what are the two kinds of bondage? It is said that it is liberation from the bondage of characteristics and the bondage of evil destinies. From grasping the characteristics of objects such as attachment, afflictions such as greed arise, which is the bondage of characteristics. Clinging to the aggregates as self and what belongs to self is the bondage of evil destinies. Liberation from these two kinds of bondage is the karma of calm abiding and insight. World Honored One, what are the five faults that the World Honored One spoke of? Starting from those, observing the body and enjoyment means attachment to the inner and outer sense bases. Noble speech refers to the speech of listening to the true Dharma. Closeness means the body is not solitary. Being content with a small amount means being satisfied only with worldly meditation. One cannot combine means the body is not solitary, and cannot combine calm abiding and insight. The other cannot reach ultimate combination means being content with a small amount, and cannot reach ultimate combination. World Honored One, what are the five obscurations? Starting from those, agitation and regret, agitation means the senses are not tranquil. Regret refers to the fact of having done bad deeds, which is

Having done non-virtuous actions and not having done virtuous actions is clinging to the mind. Dullness means the body and mind are not suitable for work. Sleep means wanting to sleep. Doubt means being confused about the Three Jewels, the truth, and karma and its results. Desire means clinging to the five objects of desire. Harmful intent means having extreme hatred towards sentient beings. O Blessed One, in what ways is the path of calm abiding completely purified? etc. Dullness and sleep cause inward shrinking. Excitement and regret cause outward distraction. Calm abiding and insight encompass all samadhi, and the dharma that obstructs these samadhi is mental wandering, so it must be fully understood and abandoned. Therefore, it is asked, O Blessed One, having entered calm abiding and insight, in how many ways can one fully know mental wandering? Mental wandering of proper attention and outward mental wandering, etc., refer to a Bodhisattva who has truly entered the Great Vehicle. Mental wandering of proper attention of the Lesser Vehicle, etc., obstructs the samadhi that is the basis of transcendental non-conceptual wisdom, so it should be completely abandoned, this is what is being taught. Tasting the flavor of absorption means experiencing the flavor of dhyana and the formless, which causes birth in long-lived gods, therefore it will ruin the work of benefiting sentient beings. If one relies on external signs, etc., it is taught that in the causal stage, whether one takes attractive or unattractive external signs, one relies on them, dwells in a place, and inwardly attends to the signs, because this is an opposing factor to signless samadhi, so it should be fully understood and abandoned. If one relies on inner attention, etc., it refers to having a bad situation.

Because the body is the place of all afflictions, it is shown to be distracted. The so-called "feeling arising from internal attention" refers to the feeling with outflows arising from attention dependent on the view of the perishable aggregate (འཇིག་ཚོགས་ལ་ལྟ་བ།), because it is in accordance with existence (སྲིད་པ།) and incompatible with all noble paths, so it is called the distraction of bad destinies. Calm abiding and insight are the nature of samadhi and wisdom, and to show that they are present in all grounds, the Blessed One asked: "Calm abiding and insight, from the first Bodhisattva ground up to the Tathagata ground, what are they the antidote to?" Maitreya replied: "Calm abiding and insight on the first ground are the antidote to the afflictions of the lower realms and the pervasive afflictions of karma and birth, because the wisdom that is the antidote to the self and phenomena is obtained." The second ground is the antidote to the faults of subtle downfalls, because the discipline is completely pure. The third ground is the antidote to desire for sensual pleasures, because irreversible meditative concentration and absorption are obtained. The fourth ground is the antidote to craving for absorption and craving for dharma, because it is in accordance with the limbs of enlightenment and dwells there many times, and because it destroys the pride in various dharmas such as the Sutras. The fifth ground is the antidote to attachment and non-attachment to samsara and nirvana, because when practicing the four noble truths, the place of pervasive affliction and purification cannot be determined. The sixth ground is the antidote to the arising of many signs, because through the yoga of calm abiding and insight, by dwelling many times in the suchness of dependent origination, the suchness of the black and white sides of pervasive affliction and purification is not seen. The seventh ground is the antidote to the arising of subtle signs, because by being connected with the one path, the state of signlessness is obtained. The eighth ground
