It is a synonym for "ground." Therefore, "The extremes of difference and sameness, Both heretics and hearers." It is widely stated. These fifteen are the distinctions of the two extremes. By abandoning these, one can realize it. Here, the extreme of viewing things as different, etc., is because of attachment to each side, thus attributing the cause to the result. Among them, the view that form, etc., and self are different is also called an extreme. The view called "one" is also an extreme. Regarding this, the aggregates of form, etc., the sense bases, and the elements, whatever is conceived as suitable for being used by a permanent self, those are the extremes of thinking that form, etc., and self are different. The internal formations, conceiving form, etc., as self, whatever is seen, heard, and known is self, while the external ones are mine. Whatever is conceived in this way is the extreme of saying that form, etc., and self are one. As stated in the sutras, the view that life is other and the body is other, and that life is the body, is shown here as the word "extreme." The reason for completely abandoning it is to completely abandon the extremes of form, etc., and self being the same or different. The Middle Way is the wisdom in which only phenomena become the object. To show that very point, it is said that from individually understanding no-self to individually understanding no essence. Seeing only phenomena, understanding that there is nothing like the child of a demoness, and thus individually understanding no-self, is a synonym for subsequent understanding. If so, how could one cling to form, etc., as being the same or different? If the meaning can be understood by the mere word "self," why are the distinctions of names such as sentient beings mentioned? Because not everyone can understand all names, therefore, in order for everyone to understand its meaning, other names are spoken. Or, in order for those who are distracted at that time to understand its meaning through other names, if only what should be said is said, then others will despise it. The statement that form, etc., is permanent is the extreme of the heretics, they are permanent.
