and the absence of outflows, conditioned phenomena, unconditioned phenomena, and so forth will be shown. Among these, the way good and bad dharmas appear and are expressed, similarly, viewing all afflictions and complete purification as the extreme of the incompatible side and the side of the antidote. Among these, non-virtue is the meaning of unease. Having faults is because it provokes all misconduct. Worldly is because of inversion. Having outflows is because it increases outflows. Conditioned is because it is produced by all conditions. The opposite of that should be understood as virtue and so forth. In order to completely abandon it, it is called the Middle Way. The incompatible side and the antidote are connected with the word 'that'. Because of not knowing the Middle Way, therefore, it is said, 'One does not accept, does not state, does not speak of any extreme.' Not accepting is because there is no attachment to the incompatible side and the antidote. Not stating is because one does not allow others to grasp the extreme of the incompatible side and the antidote as correct. Not speaking is because one does not state the two, the incompatible side and the antidote. After showing the Middle Way as the antidote to the extreme of the tirthikas and shravakas, in order to show the Middle Way as the antidote to the extreme of the bodhisattvas, it is said that 'person and dharma, those two exist' is the extreme of permanence, and 'do not exist' is the extreme of annihilation. Because of imputing permanence to one's own characteristic, saying 'exists' is the extreme of permanence. Because of completely denigrating one's own essence in every way, saying 'does not exist' is the extreme of annihilation. In order to completely abandon that, it is the Middle Way, which is whatever is in the middle of those two extremes. Some say that being separate from both extremes is considered the Middle Way here. Others say that the nature of these two is the middle of the two extremes here. How is it? Like the unreal imputation, or the dharmadhatu, if one clings to knowable and expressible things, thinking they are substantially existent and ultimately true, that is the extreme of permanence, because it does not exist in that way. Like a rabbit's horn.

To view as non-existent is the extreme of annihilation. Why? Because it is permanent. Therefore, it is called the extreme of annihilation in order to abandon it. Therefore, the middle between existence and non-existence, the essence itself, and that which is nominally existent in ultimate non-existence, is the nature of both. That is the power of the extreme of clinging to incompatible aspects and antidotes, which is the clinging to ignorance. Clinging is an extreme. Similarly, clinging to ignorance and actions, and their antidote, the unconditioned. Clinging is also an extreme. Here, mentioning the extreme between aging and death also includes consciousness, name and form, and so on. Clinging to consciousness, clinging is also an extreme. Similarly, clinging to name, form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, birth, aging, and death, clinging is also an extreme. Among these, ignorance is the nature of not knowing the truth and the Three Jewels. Actions are the nature of merit, non-merit, and immovability, because the mind with outflows manifestly performs rebirth. Similarly, consciousness and so on should also be extensively discussed in the manner of explaining the nature of all afflictions. Knowledge is the wisdom without outflows. The antidote to actions is the wisdom of the unconditioned. For that very reason, the term 'antidote' is mentioned in order to distinguish the unconditioned from others. Others are unborn, therefore, all eight types of the unconditioned are also considered here. The antidote is the mind without outflows, I think because it does not manifestly perform rebirth. Clinging to its cessation, clinging is also an extreme. Regarding that, the meaning of 'that' should be connected from consciousness and so on up to aging and death. Regarding cessation, because the essence or cause is not known, it is said, 'By what path does name and form cease?' By what does name and form cease? By the antidote to name and form, the path without outflows. Knowledge and non-
