Because of being overwhelmed by inverted misconceptions, one clings to the appearance of the imputational nature (parikalpita) of form, etc., as truly existent and conceives it as permanent. The term "impermanent" is the extreme of the Hearers (Śrāvakas). Those also impute impermanence as the nature of reality to the imputational nature of form, etc., and therefore it is an extreme. Because it causes one to be weary of cyclic existence and to fall into the extreme of nirvana, it is the extreme of viewing impermanence. The phrase "in order to completely abandon those two" means that in order to completely abandon the views of permanence and impermanence, it is the Middle Way. That is, one does not conceive of form, etc., as permanent, nor does one conceive of it as impermanent. What is that? It is non-conceptual wisdom, which does not conceive of form, etc., as permanent or impermanent in themselves. The word "form, etc." includes, by the word "etc.," the aggregates of feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, as well as the elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space, and the sense sources of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. The statement "the term 'self exists' is the extreme of imputing a person" means that the aggregates, elements, and sense sources, whether they are different or not different, are like the son of a barren woman, even though they are seen as without substance, one imputes a person as a self with a real nature, therefore it is an extreme. The term "no-self" is the extreme of denigration, which means that completely conceiving of something that exists as non-existent is called denigration. But since the self does not exist, how can it become the extreme of denigrating no-self? Therefore, it is stated, "because of denigrating the imputed existence," which should be combined with "the extreme of denigrating no-self." That is also the continuum of phenomena, in which cause and effect appear to be related. Or, in general, it is the imputation of gods and humans. The statement "in order to completely abandon that, it is the Middle Way" is in order to completely abandon the views of self and no-self. Now, it is in order to examine what the Middle Way is. Therefore, it is said, "the middle of those two, self and no-self." What is that middle?

Here is non-conceptual wisdom. Because it shows the limit of discrimination on the meaning of the grasped object, and the limit of discrimination on the meaning of the grasper. Therefore, it is said "the mind is true" and so on. Or, because it shows the limit of imputation and defamation on persons, and the limit of imputation and defamation on dharmas. Therefore, it is said "the mind is true" and so on. How the mind appears and how it is expressed, it exists as it is, this is the limit of imputation on dharmas, because it imputes the nature of the mind, which is not true, as true. The mind is not true, this is the limit of defamation. That is the nature of being separated from the grasped and the grasper, existing inexpressibly, but seen as non-existent. Because it defames the nature of dharmas in various ways, it is the limit of defamation. In order to completely abandon it, it is to realize the selflessness of dharmas, which is separated from imputation and defamation, this is the Middle Way. That is, there is no mind, no intellect, no consciousness, this is the remainder of the statement that there is no manifestation of attachment. Or, on any object, the mind of the nature of accumulating contaminated habits does not enter, and there is no intellect with the characteristic of no manifestation of fabrication, and there is no intellect with the aspect of arrogance, and there is no consciousness with discrimination, this is called the Middle Way. Among them, the mind is the alaya-vijñana, because it accumulates the habits of all contaminated dharmas. Intellect is the function of the mind, it is the function of the mind entering into good, non-good, and unspecified things. Intellect is the afflicted mind. Consciousness is the six aggregates of consciousness. Non-good dharmas and so on are "completely defiled," this is the limit of the unfavorable side. Good and so on are "completely purified," this is the limit of the antidote. The words "and so on" refer to the sinful, the mundane, the supramundane, and the contaminated.
