Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes Intelligence Steadfast Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes Intelligence Steadfast In Sanskrit: Madhyāntavibhāgaṭīkā. In Tibetan: Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Most virtuous people first pay homage to the guru and the deity of faith, and then engage in various activities. Because I want to explain the Sūtra Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, in order to let everyone know that I am also a polite person, I first pay homage to the author and commentator of the scripture, and then begin to analyze the meaning of the scripture. In order to clearly indicate this, it is said, "This treatise is well-authored," etc. What benefit is gained by doing so? If you pay homage to those with qualities and those who are kind, merit will increase. If merit increases, when writing correctly, you will not be hindered by obstacles and demons, and you will be able to successfully complete a small amount of accumulation. Alternatively, what the author says and what the commentator says are both true and reliable. Therefore, in order to generate respect for the connection between the author, the commentator, and the scripture, all the words such as "This treatise is well-authored" are spoken. By showing that the author speaks, respect for the scripture arises. For example, the author of this treatise in verse is the noble Maitreya, who is also a bodhisattva destined to be the next Buddha. He has completely transcended all the bodhisattva's superknowledges, dhāraṇīs, analytical knowledges, samādhis, powers, forbearance, and liberations, and has also completely abandoned all the obscurations on all the bodhisattva grounds. Through the commentator's true transmission, respect for the commentary will arise. The commentator here is Master Asaṅga. Master Vasubandhu heard the teachings from him and wrote the commentary on this treatise. Both of them have excellent wisdom, and are able to understand, grasp, and explain the scripture without error. Therefore, this commentary is able to explain the meaning of the scripture without error, thereby generating respect for the commentary. Therefore, those who regard certain people as reliable will have respect for the scripture and the commentary. Those who expound the Dharma will thoroughly understand the essence of the scripture and the commentary, thereby generating certainty.

Therefore, it is through understanding that one distinguishes between composing and explaining. To distinguish solely through reasoning and citation is limited, so one should generate respect for composing and explaining. Now, what is the nature of a treatise, and why is it called a treatise, will be explained. The consciousnesses that appear as collections of names, words, and letters are treatises. Alternatively, the consciousnesses that appear as the distinctive sounds that lead to the attainment of wisdom transcending the world are treatises. How are these consciousnesses composed and expressed? Since the consciousnesses of listening arise from the consciousnesses of composing and explaining, there is no fault in this. It is a treatise because it tames disciples. The taming of disciples is for the sake of generating the excellence of discipline, samadhi, and wisdom, turning away from actions that do not harmonize with body, speech, and mind, and engaging in actions that do harmonize. Or, it is a treatise because it accords with the characteristics of a treatise. By becoming accustomed to hearing the teachings, one will abandon afflictions along with their imprints, and whatever protects from the fearsome evil destinies filled with uninterrupted, prolonged, and various intense sufferings, and from existence (samsara), that is the characteristic of a treatise. Therefore, taming the enemies of affliction, and protecting from evil destinies and existence, are the characteristics of a treatise. These two are present in all the Great Vehicle and all its explanations, but not in others (Hinayana), therefore this is a treatise. To this it is said: Whatever tames all the enemies of affliction, and protects from evil destinies and existence, is a treatise because it protects the qualities of the Dharma; these two are not present in other systems. The term "this" refers to the verses of the treatise "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes," which are condensed into seven topics through the gateways of the three vehicles, abandoning afflictions and cognitive obscurations and attaining them, and because it abides in the mind, it is explicitly indicated as "this." The term "well-made" refers to the maker. Although this is for the sake of attaining the essence of sound, nevertheless, if it is proclaimed with the sound of "well," it is regarded as the maker, even though the essence of sound possesses the power of meaning, but through close transformation.
