Because of the multitude, it cannot be measured by oneself or others. In teachings similar to practices such as generosity, discipline, and meditation, why do the sutras state that the practice of the Mahayana is of extremely great fruit, while it is not so for the Sravaka Vehicle? This should be connected to "the practice of Dharma is of great fruit." Because of two reasons, this should be connected to "the practice of the Mahayana Dharma is of extremely great fruit." What are the two? Therefore, because of distinction and because of inexhaustibility. Thus it is said. If one does not understand this, therefore, how is it because of distinction? How is it because of inexhaustibility? If one asks thus, therefore, because of benefiting others without ceasing. Thus it is said. In the Mahayana, Bodhisattvas practice generosity and so forth, showing that benefiting all sentient beings is of one taste, while in the Sravaka Vehicle, the benefit of oneself is mainly explained. Therefore, the Mahayana is superior to the Sravaka Vehicle because it benefits others. Thus stating the reason, the Mahayana is superior to the Sravaka Vehicle. The accumulation of merit and wisdom, the inconceivable fruit, gathered into the three bodies, as long as the world exists, one aspires to benefit sentient beings, and even in nirvana without remainder of aggregates, the continuum does not cease, showing the characteristic of transformation, therefore it is inexhaustible. The Sravaka Vehicle is not like that, the fruit of the Sravaka assembly is nirvana without remainder of aggregates, in all ways it is said that the continuum ceases, therefore it is exhaustive. Thus, even in nirvana, it is shown that the fruit does not cease, therefore the Mahayana is superior to the Sravaka Vehicle. Alternatively, the meaning of the Mahayana is generosity and so forth, aspiring to benefit all sentient beings. The meaning of the Sravaka Vehicle is not like that, because the Sravakas are devoted to their own benefit. The Dharma of the Bodhisattvas, such as generosity, transforms into a body without outflows, therefore, even in nirvana, the continuum will not be cut off.

Ra gyi. The path of the Shravakas is like a raft, so it will cut off complete nirvana, because they are not inexhaustible. Therefore, only the Dharma of the Mahayana itself can bring great fruit, not the Shravaka Vehicle. After practicing mindfulness, then the practice of Dharma that is in accordance with it should be explained. Therefore, if someone asks, what is the practice of Dharma that is in accordance with it? Therefore it is said: "Not distracted, not inverted, transformed into the Dharma that is in accordance." What is meant by contemplation, and following the Dharma to be known, is the practice of the nature of the Shamatha and Vipassana that is entered into, this is the practice of the Dharma that is in accordance. Among them, the nature of practicing Shamatha is not being distracted. The nature of practicing Vipassana is being transformed without inversion, these two are the practice of the Dharma that is in accordance. Since the word "not" can have multiple meanings, if one does not know what it means to be not distracted, therefore it is said: "Because there are no six distractions, therefore it is not distracted." If one does not know what the six distractions are, therefore the six distractions are extensively explained. Even so, it only slightly points out the distinction, but does not explain the nature of distraction. If someone asks, how should one understand the characteristics of these six distractions? Therefore, it is extensively explained, "Rising and entering into objects." What is meant by "intelligent" refers to the one with intelligence, that is, the Bodhisattva. Among them, rising refers to the five consciousnesses rising from Samadhi. That is to say, when entering into Samadhi, if any one of the five consciousnesses, such as the eye, arises, then it becomes rising from Samadhi, this is the distraction of self-nature, because it looks outward. Since the five aggregates of consciousness are the nature of distraction, therefore the five aggregates of consciousness rising from Samadhi are called the distraction of self-nature. Entering into objects refers to outward distraction. Some people

When, at any time, the consciousness enters another object involuntarily from the object of the samadhi of abiding, it is called external distraction because of shifting to another object. Another explanation is that abandoning the object of the samadhi of abiding, the consciousness shifts to another object, which is called external distraction. Tasting, sinking, and excitement of samadhi are called internal distractions. If the abider tastes the samadhi itself with afflictions such as attachment, because the afflicted samadhi is close at hand, one will be distracted from the true samadhi. Sinking and excitement will also distract from the samadhi of the union of calm abiding and insight. Because tasting, sinking, and excitement will cause the samadhi to deteriorate, tasting and so on are internal distractions. The thought of conviction is the distraction of signs, meaning that thinking "I am a meditator, a great one," because of this thought, striving for samadhi is wrong thinking, so one will be distracted from obtaining or not obtaining virtuous qualities, so it is called the distraction of signs. Here the cause is stated, because one practices by taking it as a sign. Because one wants to gain the benefit of knowledge, one takes the thought of conviction as a sign, thinking that one will be trusted, and therefore enters samadhi. Attention associated with self-grasping is the distraction of bad rebirth, meaning that although one desires the qualities of samadhi from the heart, one is proud of thinking "I am a meditator," therefore, praising oneself and belittling others, so it is attention associated with self-grasping. Why is this called attention of bad rebirth? Because, due to the power of bad rebirth, the arrogance of "I am" arises. Therefore, it is said that "distraction is distinguished by bad rebirth." What is bad rebirth? It is the habit of the arrogance of "I am" that has completely grown, and it produces the arrogance of "I am."
