The mind with defilements should appear as self. The appearance of consciousness refers to the six consciousnesses. The reason for saying this is that it appears as the nature of grasping objects, and from this arises various appearances, so it appears as consciousness. The so-called "meaningless," refers to all four appearances. Appearing as objects and sentient beings is without characteristics, while appearing as self and consciousness is because it is a reversed appearance. The reason for saying this is that objects and sentient beings appear as the nature of the two grasps, and there cannot be a reversed appearance, so the absence of characteristics itself is the cause of meaninglessness. Others appear as the nature of the grasper, so they are not without characteristics, and the reversed appearance itself is the cause of meaninglessness, it is said. A characteristic is the appearance of grasping the nature of impermanence, etc., on an object, but these are not present on the object, because it appears as the nature of the grasped, therefore the absence of characteristics is not the grasper, this is a summary statement. Or, the accurate perception of an object is called a characteristic, but these are not present on the object, because there is no object, so it is without characteristics. If both are without characteristics and are mutually different natures, like form, etc., and eyes, etc. If this is the case, then what is the difference between form, etc., and eyes, etc., which are widely known in the world and in treatises, and consciousness, which has a distinct nature? Just as these are clear, if consciousness, which is a nature without difference from these, is completely grasped, then there cannot be a more important meaning than this. This can be established as follows: Although there is no nature of separate objects, because the mind streams are determined separately, consciousness itself, grasped separately, appears as separate objects, etc., arising from its own seeds. For example, hungry ghosts see water filled with pus, blood, feces, and urine, etc., while people holding sticks see double doubts, and people know that water is cool, can be washed, can be drunk, can be entered, and has no obstacles. Yogis, through the practice of contemplating impurity, etc., constantly see the ground filled with skeletons. Similarly, for the exhaustion of earth, etc.

All are seen to be pervaded by earth and so on. Depending on meaning, is the attainment of selflessness meaningless? It is not reasonable for consciousness to arise in the form of different natures of meaning. Therefore, it is certain that even without meaning, the consciousness that appears as meaning and sentient beings, etc., is the most likely to arise. Without grasping, the appearance of grasping at the duality of self and consciousness is itself a distorted appearance. Or, just as consciousness completely examines meaning, self and consciousness are meaningless, just like obtaining a tiger, etc., because of distorted perception, it is a distorted appearance. In this way, consciousness is also empty of the nature of being completely conceptualized by other consciousnesses, which arises from the conclusion of the tenets. Therefore, just as meaning and sentient beings appear, the meaning of the appearance of self and consciousness is also non-existent. Without meaning, that consciousness is also non-existent. Because of consciousness, it is consciousness, and if that has no object of grasping, it should not be a knower, therefore, because there is no meaning, there is no consciousness only in consciousness, because of the appearance of meaning, sentient beings, self, and consciousness, it is not non-existent. If it is determined that that is non-existent, then apart from that, because the nature of consciousness is not shown, it will become a fallacy of complete non-existence. If it is a nature different from that, then how can that be consciousness? How can they be mutually different? Thus, the grasped and the grasper are non-existent, but the consciousness that appears as that is existent, and the unreal conceptualization is existent. The two are not existent there, and in order to show well that the previously made vow has been established, it is said: Unreal conceptualization, that is established because of that. That refers to the four kinds of consciousness, and also the unreal conceptualization is established. That "therefore" refers to the reason just mentioned, that is, because there is no meaning, it is said that that is also non-existent. In order to further prove that unreal conceptualization is existent, and to prove well that the two are non-existent, it is said, "Not like that, not completely non-existent," etc. Or, that "therefore" is for what is to come below. In order to show that itself well.

Ra. It is said, "It is neither thus nor completely non-existent," because it is neither existent in that way nor completely non-existent. Why does that which appears as the grasped and the grasper arise? Even those four aspects are not in accordance with how they are grasped, because they are without aspects and appear wrongly. Because the nature of consciousness is completely empty by the imputation of others, the grasped itself does not exist. Because only delusion arises, it is also not completely non-existent, which means that although it is empty in its own nature, whatever appears is called delusion, like an illusion. The word "only" is a word that distinguishes the remainder from it, meaning that there is a deluded consciousness. This will show that it is not completely non-existent. Why is that deluded consciousness not accepted as non-existent, just as there is no grasped and grasper? Because it transcends the realm of all consciousness. If one thinks that no one can ascertain that it exists, then it is like this: It is desired to be liberated after it is exhausted. Therefore, it is not accepted as non-existent. How is that? It can be inferred that it exists through the power of the completely defiled and completely purified aspects. Otherwise, if it is accepted as completely non-existent, then there is also no bondage, which means that if even delusion does not exist, then there is no bondage because there is no complete defilement. If it is said that one is liberated from the previous bondage, then liberation will also cease to exist. Or why is it not accepted as existing as it appears, or why is it not accepted as completely non-existent? To dispel the thought of others like that. It has been said, "It is desired to be liberated after it is exhausted," which means that if it is not exhausted, it is the word for bondage. Otherwise, it will be said that there is no bondage and liberation, which will become the fault of slandering complete defilement and nirvana. If what appears as the grasped and the grasper, even to animals, if that becomes the ultimate truth, if it is established in that way, then there will be constant complete defilement, and in that way, nirvana will also cease to exist. If even delusion does not exist in that way, then there will also be no complete defilement.
