If there is no inherent existence, why does the world mistakenly believe that it exists? When asked this question, the Buddha replied, "Therefore, it exists." This refers to the conceptualization of the grasper and the grasped. Illusions, although empty of things like elephants, appear as elephants and so on. These two unreal, or rather, through the complete conceptualization of these two unreal, arise the unreal imputation. Through the word "unreal," it is shown that the grasper and the grasped do not exist therein. Through the word "imputation," it is shown that things do not exist as conceptualized. Thus, the nature of liberation from the grasper and the grasped is explained. What is that? It is mind and mental factors, past and future, present, as cause and effect, the three realms, beginningless time, the ultimate of nirvana, and things that accord with samsara. These are all undifferentiatedly unreal imputations. The difference lies in the conceptualization of the grasper and the grasped. Among them, the conceptualization of the grasped is the consciousness that appears as things and sentient beings. The conceptualization of the grasper is the consciousness that appears as self and awareness. These two, namely the grasper and the grasped. Among them, the grasped is form and so on. The grasper is eye consciousness and so on. The very absence of the reality of the grasper and the grasped, namely emptiness, is the emptiness of unreal imputation. However, unreal imputation is not non-existent. For example, a rope is empty of the reality of a snake, and due to its non-snake nature, it is empty at all times. But the reality of the rope is not non-existent, and it is the same here. Therefore, "it exists" refers to unreal imputation. Therefore, afflictions arise due to sudden obscurations. Therefore, it is shown that it cannot be realized like the water element and so on. Therefore, where there is nothing, one truly follows and realizes its emptiness. So, what does not exist where? In unreal imputation, both (the grasper and the grasped) do not exist. Therefore, the real

Unreal parikalpita is seen as empty of two. What remains in this is what exists, what remains in this? Unreal parikalpita emptiness, and those two are also not slandered here, not falsely added, seeing as it is, thus well known. In that unreal parikalpita in two Not seeing, therefore not falsely adding. Seeing that there is unreal parikalpita and emptiness, not slandering, what is emptiness, that is what exists, and what is empty, that is not in this. The nature of emptiness is shown as it is. Everything is nothing or everything is something, emptiness is also a perverted nature, emptiness becomes nothing. If there is no name called emptiness, then it cannot be emptiness, because the nature of Dharma depends on things, such as impermanence and so on. If both exist? Emptiness becomes nothing. If the two are like rabbit horns, how can that unreal parikalpita be empty? For example, like monks seeing a monastery, do they see others as empty of others? For example, on a rope or illusion, the appearance of a snake and a man, etc., which are not self-existent, is to prevent some from grasping. Just as it is said that snakes and men, etc. are empty, so too, in unreal parikalpita, the appearance of the grasper and the grasped, which are not self-existent, is said to show the two in order to abandon the grasping and manifest attachment of children. Empty is not not empty. Why was this verse composed? It is to know that all conditioned and unconditioned things are free from two. Thus, by blocking one extreme, this is all neither empty nor not empty, thus it is showing the intention of what is said in the Prajnaparamita. Otherwise, it will become contradictory. Furthermore, it is to show the Middle Way well, otherwise it will become only empty or the extreme of not empty. Or slander.

In order to summarize the immediately preceding discussion on refuting superimposition and addition, this treatise was composed. Because it arises from the relationship of cause and condition. The unreal conceptualization is compounded, and because it is not dependent on it, emptiness is uncompounded. The explanation comes from within the Prajñāpāramitā and so on. "By existence" means the unreal conceptualization. By the nature of the unreal conceptualization, the compounded is not empty. "By non-existence" means the two, empty by the nature of the apprehended and the apprehender. Emptiness exists in the unreal conceptualization as its dharma-nature, and in emptiness, there also exists the unreal conceptualization as the entity of a dharma-possessor. Thus, even though it is uncompounded, it is not empty by the nature of dharma-nature, but empty by the nature of the two called non-things. "That is the Middle Way" is from within the Ratnakūṭa Sūtra and so on. "Light-protector, existence" is called one extreme. "Non-existence" is called the second extreme. Light-protector, whichever is the middle of these two extremes, this is the correct separate observation of dharmas, whatever appears, it is thus made to accord with the Middle Way. "All" means the compounded and the uncompounded. "It is also not entirely empty" because there is unreal conceptualization, and also emptiness within it. "It is also not entirely non-empty" because there are no two. All existence or all non-existence becomes an extreme, not the Middle Way. Thus, after stating the characteristic of existence and the characteristic of non-existence of the unreal conceptualization, this "by closely indicating existence, it is existence itself. The characteristic of existence, the unreal conceptualization exists" this statement means that the unreal conceptualization exists. "By closely indicating non-existence, it is non-existence itself, the characteristic of non-existence" that is, there is no entity of the apprehended and the apprehender, like this, in the unreal conceptualization there are no two, therefore the unreal conceptualization also does not exist by the nature of the two.
