The appearing consciousness arises, but things like form do not exist. Holding onto this, one abides in the object of focus, and thoroughly engages in not focusing on the apprehended. Therefore, one should investigate in this way: When consciousness arises, or when the place of arising is determined, will it focus on the object? Regarding this, since there is no time of arising, it is impossible for it to focus on the object at the time of arising. Because it arises as the nature of appearing object. It is also not possible after arising, because other than arising as the nature of appearing object, what else can be done to say that consciousness focuses on the object? There is no other function of consciousness. If one says that it is the present consciousness itself that focuses, and not the time of arising, then the cause of focus is not the arising of consciousness, and it is meaningless to fully contemplate there. If one holds onto the present object of focus, then it will become the fault of momentary destruction. Since there is no specific nature either, it is the same as before, and consciousness cannot focus on the object of focus. However, if one wants it to have a specific nature at the time of focusing on the object of focus, even then, the specific nature appears as something else, so it would follow that the arising of something else focuses on the object of focus. The other is the meaning of the time of cessation, which is the cause of the object of focus of the consciousness at the time of arising, and it is also the cause of one's own appearing consciousness, so one thinks that it is different from the other causes. Even so, if one completely contemplates that the subtle particles of form, etc., or their collection, are the only object of focus, then neither of these will become the object of focus, because all consciousnesses arise as appearing as vases and blankets, etc., but not as appearing as subtle particles. The object of focus of the consciousness that appears as a different aspect of the object is not different, and the eyes, etc., will also become the object of focus. Furthermore, if one thinks that one is focusing on each individual subtle particle, then this cannot be answered either, because those individual subtle particles are intended to be focused on their own individual selves, but not on their collection. There, the consciousness that appears as individual subtle particles does not arise.

Thus, they appear as aggregates, therefore it is impossible to focus on subtle particles. Because what can be analyzed cannot be a cause. If the aggregation of subtle particles is not an object of focus, then like the immediately preceding condition, it is considered the cause for correctly knowing the condition of focus. Therefore, it is also impossible to be a condition of focus at the time of cessation. If cessation itself is the object of focus, then the past and future will become objects, and it will be established that there is no object of focus for consciousness in dreams and so on. Some say that the consciousness of dreams and so on also focuses on signs, so it is not without an object of focus. A sign is an image of a thing, the nature of a non-associated formation. For meaningless things like dreams, its sign is unreasonable, just as its image cannot be formed without a face and so on. Consciousness that arises or has already arisen does not focus on signs, because non-existence and negation have been explained before. Therefore, the nature of non-associated formations cannot be a sign, consciousness itself appears as a thing, it is an image of a thing, and it must be undoubtedly admitted that consciousness itself is the aspect of the thing. If there is no aspect, then for it, the grasper and the grasped will not be definite. Others think that unobstructed form itself is the impurity and so on that is focused on in dreams and by yogis. But because it also has the nature of color and shape and so on, it contradicts being unobstructed itself and being merely an object of mind. Apart from being merely non-revealing form, other unobstructed forms are not explained in the scriptures, therefore it itself is merely conceptualization. Others think that because a blind person does not grasp blue and other forms in a dream, experiencing the thing itself is the object of the consciousness of the dream. A blind person does not grasp form in a dream, because he does not understand words, so he cannot distinguish names, so he cannot tell others. If the experience itself appears in the dream, then why not think that the blind person can also see form? Because he also focused on form in previous lives.
