The afflictions to be abandoned through meditation are the first unfavorable factors, and their antidote is right effort. If you ask why, therefore it is said "that," meaning that the path is cultivated through right effort. Diligence at the time of samadhi, free from dullness and agitation, gathered by right view, is right effort. Therefore, in order to abandon the afflictions to be abandoned through meditation, the antidote of the path is cultivated. Therefore, by accomplishing right samadhi, right effort is called the first antidote. The second in the cultivation of the path itself, the characteristics of the near afflictions, dullness and agitation, is right mindfulness, which is called the antidote, and should be connected in this way. If you ask why, therefore it is said, because mindfulness abides very closely in the causes of calm abiding and so on, therefore there is no dullness and agitation. By the sound of the word "etc.," it should be known that it is the cause of enhancement and the cause of equanimity. Among them, tranquility pacifies the cause of distraction, therefore it is calm abiding. The cause of calm abiding and so on is the cause of the function of calm abiding and so on. Among them, if the mind arises with agitation or suspects that it will become agitated, then remembering things that cause aversion is the cause of calm abiding. If the mind becomes dull or suspects that it will become dull, then remembering things that cause joy is the cause of enhancement. Or, one may attain a single definite path in calm abiding, or one may attain a single definite path in insight, or one may enter through union; for those who are defiled by those two near afflictions, remembering spontaneous accomplishment is the cause of equanimity. What is the unfavorable factor of the mastery of the nature of qualities such as clairvoyance? It is the non-afflictive ignorance of the nature of the obscuration of absorption. The third is its right samadhi, which should be connected and called the antidote. If you ask why, therefore it is said, because by abiding in meditation, qualities such as clairvoyance are manifestly accomplished. Meditation is the place for manifestly accomplishing all excellent qualities, therefore manifestly.

The conducive aspects for manifestly accomplishing qualities such as knowing are the antidotes to the obscurations of absorption. Therefore, such correct effort shows separation from the obscurations of afflictions. Correct mindfulness is the complete purification of samadhi. Correct samadhi is separation from the obscurations of absorption. In brief, the cultivation of antidotes should be understood as threefold, namely, by the distinctions of beginning, attainment, and accomplishment. In detail, there are many kinds. How so? Conformity and inversion. That is extensively explained. Among them, conformity without inversion is the path of seeing, because it alone is its object. Because of conforming to it, it is conformity without inversion. This is the cultivation of ordinary beings, and because it is not solely its object, it is inversion, since ordinary beings have not abandoned all afflictions. If so, how does it become conformity without inversion that has become inversion? Because of the homogenous cause of the utterly pure realm of phenomena, arising from the habitual tendencies of hearing. That is, from the cultivation of mindfulness, up to the cultivation of strength. This, called "without inversion but connected to inversion," is the cultivation of the limbs of enlightenment and the cultivation of the path of learners, and because it alone is its object, it is without inversion. Because there are afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation, it is connected to inversion. This, called "neither inversion nor connected to inversion," is the cultivation of arhats, the non-learners, and because it alone is its object, it is without inversion. Because arhats have abandoned all defilements, it is not connected to inversion. Now, in order to show the difference in the cultivation of antidotes by bodhisattvas compared to shravakas, it is said: "For bodhisattvas, the object and the mental activity, and the attainment, that is a superior difference." Thus it is said, among which the object
