In order, it is so. Thus, on the ground of the path of seeing, these faculties are considered primary. Others say that when the roots of virtue that are in accordance with the aspect of liberation arise, faith and so on should not be called faculties. Having generated the roots of virtue that are in accordance with the aspect of liberation, since desire and so on are empowered, these are called faculties. To show that very meaning, it is said that desire is what empowers, and it is combined with what is called the faculty of faith. Combining is doing. Not forgetting is not losing the object. Because there is no distraction, it is not distracted. Because it thoroughly distinguishes, it thoroughly distinguishes. Because diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom, which are mental events, empower those combining, not forgetting, not distracting, and thoroughly distinguishing, they are called the faculties. Here, it should be said as follows: at the time of generating and not generating the roots of virtue that are in accordance with the aspect of liberation, desire and so on are empowered, and there is no difference in the nature of faith and so on. Thus, at that time, because they empower, those are established as faculties. Those very faith and so on, when they become endowed with strength, are called strengths, because they are explained after the faculties. How are those endowed with strength? Therefore, it is said: Because the unfavorable side is weakened. It means that the unfavorable side has become weak. To show that very meaning, it is said, "When those very ones," meaning the faculties of faith and so on. The unfavorable sides, such as disbelief, are disbelief, laziness, forgetfulness, distraction, and lack of awareness. The unfavorable sides and faith and so on are not mixed because they are extremely weak, and because they do not universally arise from time to time, it is a synonym for "untimely." At that time, they are called strengths. At that time, because those have not weakened the unfavorable sides, the faculties are mixed with the unfavorable sides. If they are called faculties without subduing the unfavorable sides, then how in the reality of the wise?

If it is said that because of the purity of the mundane, faith and so on are taught as faculties, then there it is considered that there is no distinction between the faculties. Here, there is a distinction because it shows the distinction of the roots of virtue that are in accordance with the definitive aspect. Therefore, there is no contradiction. Therefore, here it is said that these faculties themselves are called powers. One who has become faithful exerts effort on cause and effect, saying, 'The cause of this effect is this, and the effect of this cause is this.' In this way, one who has become faithful, because of faith in the effect, exerts effort on its cause. Having exerted effort, mindfulness is established. Having established mindfulness, because there is no distraction, the mind is placed in equanimity, becoming one-pointed. Having placed the mind in equanimity, one knows exactly as it is, and the wisdom supported by samadhi becomes clear. If the faculties are shown after having generated what is in accordance with the part of liberation, then after what is in accordance with the part of liberation are those in accordance with the part of determination, and after the faculties are the powers. Therefore, at the time of the faculties of those in accordance with the part of determination, one should know, or one should know at the time of the powers. Similarly, one must state the nature of the faculties and powers of those in accordance with the part of determination, or whether it is a nature different from that. Therefore, it is said: 'For the faculties and the powers, the definitive aspect agrees two by two.' Or, just as those in accordance with the part of liberation are completely separated by meditating on the antidotes, or just as they are completely separated by faith and so on, so too are those in accordance with the part of determination. Therefore, if the faculties are shown after having generated what is in accordance with the part of liberation, then it is said extensively. Therefore, it is said: 'The definitive aspect agrees two by two.' All of this is said. At the time of the warm stages and the peaks are the faculties. Because those roots of virtue are small, they are not suitable at those times, so those are just the faculties. At the time of patience and the supreme mundane dharmas are the powers, that is
