If that very thing is established as the object to be focused on and the agent of focusing, then the object of present consciousness will become meaningless, because it has already been established as its nature. The time of arising will also become meaningless, because it does not exist. The time of arising will not become meaningless, if this is the case, if the object of the realm exists, then consciousness will obtain the nature of appearing there. If it is said that the cause of consciousness appearing in the realm is the external object, if this is the case, then the consciousness of the past, future, and dreams, etc., will become without form. Or it will become non-existent because of its meaninglessness. Incomplete conditions cannot produce results, because it would be too extreme. Non-existence cannot be a condition. External objects also do not become the objective condition of consciousness, because it occurs even without it. Therefore, it must be admitted that all consciousness of those with cataracts, etc., does not depend on external objects as objects. Under the meaning of the sense bases, the meaning of dependent origination must be explained. Therefore, the meaning of dependent origination is: on the cause and effect of action, there is no addition or subtraction. This is what is said. It is the meaning of immovability, impermanence, and arising from the cause of power. In the Sutra Pitaka it is also said: "This exists, therefore this arises; this arises, therefore this arises; such as ignorance conditions actions, etc., are extensively explained." This is also to show that it is intended to prevent the addition and subtraction of the cause, effect, and action of dependent origination. The meaning of no addition and subtraction to cause, effect, and action is the meaning of dependent origination, this is what is said. The word 'action' is explained as 'doer'. Among them, the addition to the cause is to abandon ignorance, etc., and to cling to persons, Ishvara, self, and the chief, etc., as the cause itself. In order to show this, for the actions, etc., that ultimately reach old age and death, the incompatible causes are grasped.

The one called "Relying" has been spoken. The causes of impermanent things like formations, and permanent things like the self, are incompatible, meaning they are different. Or, depending on the change in the nature of the cause, sprouts etc. are seen from seeds etc., but there is no change in the permanent nature. Because the incompatible cause itself is perceived as the cause, it is imputation on the cause. To deny the cause is to perceive it as having no cause. Saying that formations etc. arise without a cause clarifies that ignorance etc. are the causes of formations etc. Imputation on the result is because one perceives that formations etc. with a self arise from conditions such as ignorance etc. Some say that if there is a self, then formations etc. arise from conditions such as ignorance etc.; if there is no self, then they do not. Thus, if one imputes a self on the result, formations etc., it is called imputation on the result. Others say that because it possesses the substance of a self, or because it benefits and harms, perceiving that formations etc. with a self arise from conditions such as ignorance etc. is called imputation on the result. Denying the result is because one perceives that formations etc. do not arise from conditions such as ignorance etc. For example, there is no good conduct, no bad conduct, and no afterlife, thus speaking of denying non-existent good conduct, bad conduct, and the afterlife. Imputation on the agent is because one perceives that ignorance etc. are the agents when formations etc. arise. Saying that if one perceives that ignorance etc. are the nature of things and have become other things when formations etc. arise, that is imputation on the agent. Denying the agent is because one perceives it as powerless. Merely by the existence of ignorance etc., formations etc. should be able to arise, but because one perceives it as powerless, it is denying the agent. Because it does not exist, one knows that there is no imputation and denial.

The so-called "action" means that because there is no augmentation or defamation of causes, effects, and agents, it should be understood that there is no augmentation and no defamation. Thus, one who is skilled in dependent origination should know that this is the antidote to whatever clings to an agent, whether it is self or other, apart from ignorance. Here, apart from ignorance, there is no agent, whether self or other, that performs virtuous or non-virtuous actions. Apart from actions, there is no other agent of consciousness. In all places, it should be said appropriately, because actions and so on arise from those who are unwavering like ignorance, and those who are capable like impermanence. Below the meaning of dependent origination, the meaning of place and non-place must be stated. Therefore, it is said, "Unwillingness, willingness, and purity, arising together and acting as master, obtaining and enjoying all, that is the meaning of other's power." Place and non-place should be understood by the meaning of the seven aspects of other's power, so-called place is the cause, non-place is not the cause. As it is said: "Speaking truthfully and without anger, even if the beggar is small, one should give, these three aspects by place, will be born in the realm of the gods." As it appears from this verse, it is obvious that place is the cause. Alternatively, place is existence, non-place is non-existence. To this, the wise is skilled in place and non-place. The object of other's power is other's own power, which is the meaning of relying on others. Those seven aspects are also included in the three: karma, afflictions, and the other's power of life. Among them, the other's power of unwillingness is, so-called unwillingness is the evil destinies, because it shows that going there is other's power. Committing evil deeds, including the actions of body, speech, and mind such as killing, and accompanied by actions and results, even if unwilling, one will fall into evil destinies, so it is said. The evil destinies are sentient hells, hungry ghosts, and animals. Those do not want to go there because they are extremely painful.
