From arising and so on, until reaching attainment, if any obstacle to that is removed, then from conjunction and so on, until the complete practice of samadhi, these will become ten functions. Here, although each is distinct, because there is no difference in the cause of arising and so on, it is shown without distinction. The term "by the occasion of that matter" is a synonym for taking the matter of arising and so on as the main focus. For example, when virtues and so on become obstacles to the cause of arising and so on, they are called obstacles to arising and so on. For example, just as a wall and so on obscures appearance, its result, eye consciousness, is also called an obstacle. If this is done, removing the thirty obstacles of these ten dharmas shows the thirty functions. Among them, the three functions of the arising of virtue are conjunction, conjunction with the source of arising, and proper attention. For example, the term "eye and so on" is an example here. Eye and so on are the function of the arising of consciousness, but not the function of abiding and so on. Therefore, when the absence of conjunction and so on becomes an obvious obstacle to conjunction and so on, it is transmitted one after another, thereby also hindering the arising of virtue. Similarly, the obstacle to arising is the obstacle to virtue, therefore it is said "in order to generate it." Because the abiding and so on of virtue is impossible, it shows that this is only the obstacle to arising. For enlightenment, there is the function of abiding, enlightenment is the transformation of abiding. Suchness, without defilement, is abiding. The reason is mentioned here in order not to be confused. As long as the world exists, it exists, so it will not be confused, will not change, and will not be reversed. The enlightenment of the Hearers and so on, after doing the cause of self, will be reversed. Bodhisattvas, with the superior intention of benefiting all sentient beings and making them happy, enter into the assemblies, possessing the characteristic of abiding, wishing that as long as the mind of enlightenment exists, they will abide, not merely for the sake of not arising like the Hearers and so on.

Since it exists, it will not become unborn, so here it will also become born. Therefore, what is said is the cause of the abiding of Bodhi, not the cause of birth. Apart from that, there is no other cause of abiding, so that is why it is said. Or, suchness completely pure is Bodhi, suchness is naturally pure, so there is no birth. If temporary defilements are removed, then by those causes, it is said to abide forever, not to be born. The cause of the abiding of Bodhi is the arising of virtuous roots, attention, and the complete accumulation of merit. Here, not arising virtue, etc., is because it becomes an obstacle to the arising of virtue, etc., and harms the abiding of Bodhi, so it is said to be an obstacle to abiding. The cause of abiding is like the food of sentient beings, this is a metaphor. Food that is swallowed in one mouthful, etc., does not produce non-existent beings, but makes previously born beings abide. The so-called cause of reliance, reliance is the Bodhicitta, because it is the basis of all virtuous dharmas. Whatever becomes what in what place, that is its reliance, because it holds it, like the vessel world of the sentient being world, this is a metaphor. Its cause is noble lineage and perfect spiritual friends, and a mind that is not completely weary. For those who do not have noble lineage, etc., because it contradicts the cause of reliance, it is also said to be an obstacle to reliance. Therefore, the obstacle to reliance is an obstacle to truly grasping, because it is the cause of Bodhicitta, so it is said. The cause of clarity is the obstacle of the wise Bodhisattva, in order to show it well. That is, perfect accomplishment, associating with capable people, and associating with people who do not think of others as harmful. Here, not having accomplishment, etc., because it contradicts the cause of clarity of the wise, it is said to be an obstacle to clarity. Therefore, the obstacle to clarity is an obstacle to having wisdom, in order to show that.

The function has been mentioned. For example, like the appearance of form, this is an example here. Appearance is merely the factor that clarifies form, not the factor that produces birth, etc. The function of transformation is the factor of non-confusion, because it is the nature of eliminating gain and defamation, confusion, so non-confusion is the path of seeing. Called the transformation of non-confusion, for example, like the ashes of trees, deer, etc. Its three functions are destroying the inverted bad situation, the absence of the three obscurations of afflictions, etc., and the complete maturation of the wisdom that makes complete liberation mature. For example, like fire, etc., such as cooking, etc., this is different from rice, etc., and belongs to its lineage. Called transforming into rice, etc., its function is fire, etc. The function of separation is the factor of no obscuration, because the remainder other than the obscurations to be eliminated by the path of seeing is eliminated by this, so no obscuration is the path of meditation. Its three functions are destroying the co-emergent bad situation, and diligence and mindfulness. These are also the function of separation, because they are the antidote to the function of non-separation. Therefore, for separation, the obscuration is the obscuration to non-obscuration, so it is said. That is, it obscures the antidote object of the separation function, here the factor is mentioned, because it is separated from obscuration. By this separation is carried out, so it is separation. The function of transformation is the factor of dedication, because it has the characteristic of combining the roots of virtue with great Bodhi. That is, turning away from samsara and enjoyment, and without discouragement. Therefore, transformation is the obstacle to function, and should be regarded as the obstacle to dedication. Why? Because dedication is the characteristic of completely dedicating the mind to great Bodhi. The function of trust is the factor of non-fear, that is, thinking that beings exist, and faith in the Dharma, and understanding the meaning of the intention. The trust of these dharmas
