Wala! What is not being afraid? It is to believe in and not be afraid of the profound and vast Dharma of emptiness, the Buddha, and the Bodhisattvas. Thinking that something is impossible for a person is to misunderstand and not comprehend the way of the Mahayana being revealed, as well as not believing in the qualities of discipline, meditation, wisdom, and so on. Not believing in the Dharma is not believing that the Buddha's scriptures, with their profound and vast meaning, can be understood and that the meaning is not reversed. Using the meaning as if it were the literal word is to discriminate about the meaning of unborn, unceasing, and primordially peaceful, etc., only as the literal word, and not to comprehend the meaning of the intent. Therefore, one does not believe in the meaning of unborn, etc. What are the obscurations in this? They are doubt, not knowing what is contrary to wisdom and meditation, and using what is contrary to the meaning of the intent. The three obscurations of not being stingy are said to be: not being stingy is to teach the Dharma for the sake of what causes the holy Dharma to abide, or for the sake of following others. Not being particularly attached to the holy Dharma is not cherishing it, and therefore not causing others' minds to understand it, and not causing the holy Dharma to abide for a long time. Not being particularly attached to gain, respect, and offerings is not cherishing them. Although one is particularly attached to the holy Dharma, there is concern that oneself and others are equal or superior, and therefore one is afraid that gain, etc., will become obstacles and does not teach the Dharma. Although one does not have particular attachment to gain and respect, it is said that one does not have compassion for sentient beings, which means that one does not teach the Dharma because one does not have compassion for sentient beings. Not having compassion means that one will not become a harm to the suffering of sentient beings. What are the obscurations in this? They are not being particularly attached, and attachment to gain and respect, and not having compassion. The three obscurations of power are said to be: power is the Buddha himself, because he has obtained all aspects of the power of the mind. Because those three obscurations are not understood, therefore it is said that those who act with power cannot obtain it. Pow

My doing depends on the mind's freedom. Those who do not attain freedom are said to be obscured by freedom itself. Freedom is the perfection of wisdom, renunciation, and power. Alternatively, those who do not attain freedom are shown as synonyms for freedom, meaning not attaining Buddhahood itself. Being deficient in hearing means being permanently separated from hearing the holy Dharma, just as being permanently separated from limbs is called being deficient in limbs. Being deficient in hearing also arises from the karma that leads to being deficient in the Dharma, because one abides in holding one's own view as supreme, or relies on an evil friend. Those who have no regret, regarding the Mahayana sutras, say, "This is spoken by demons, it is the cause of bad destinies, this is not spoken by the Buddha," and thereby abandon it, and prevent others from having faith in it, copying the text, burning it, and throwing it into water, etc., in these ways they fully nourish the seeds of karma that do not possess hearing the holy Dharma, thereby causing the karma of being deficient in the Dharma to grow. Even if one is not deficient in hearing, one still hears little, and because the accumulation of wisdom is not fully complete, it is added with "obscuration." Hearing little means one cannot well distinguish the Dharma. Even if one hears much, but does not fully practice samadhi, it is also added with "obscuration." Because there is not any one of the desires, etc., or because there is not any one of the eight renunciations, because one has not fully practiced meditation, one has not fully practiced samadhi. Alternatively, not fully accomplishing the Buddha's vajra-like samadhi, etc., is not fully practicing. What is the obscuration here? It is the karma that leads to being deficient in the Dharma and hearing little, as well as the near afflictions such as lax wisdom and sinking and excitement that are incompatible with samadhi. "This obscuration is" refers to the lack of combination, etc. "Virtue, etc." refers to the ten things up to freedom. What does it mean that it will become ten kinds of actions?
