For the sake of attainment, this is the characteristic of reason. By distinguishing the middle and end of the treatise, it is divided into the chapter of characteristics, first is the explanation. After explaining the characteristics, it is the occasion for explaining the accomplishment. After that, because of being touched, it is mentioned that "Therefore, he takes control of the obscurations." Pervasiveness and partiality, excess and, equality, acceptance and abandonment are, the manifestation of the two obscurations. These two accomplishments are the obscurations of those of the Bodhisattva lineage and, those of the Hearer and other lineages. Because the meaning to be obscured is different, in order to fully show the difference of obscurations, this chapter is composed. Among them, pervasiveness refers to the afflictive obscuration and the cognitive obscuration of those of the Bodhisattva lineage, which is called pervasiveness because it is pervasive. Because it obscures all meanings. The meaning of all meanings and the meaning of benefiting others. Or, because the two obscurations of afflictive obscuration and cognitive obscuration are attributed to the obscuration of Bodhisattvas, it is called pervasiveness. Affliction itself is an obscuration because it is obscuring. Just because the dharma of affliction itself is the same. Here, near afflictions are also regarded as the sound of afflictions. Otherwise, in the so-called nine characteristics of afflictions, jealousy and stinginess would not be included. Because these two are near afflictions. Because it obscures the knowable, it is the cognitive obscuration. Because it completely obscures the knowable, it will not become an object of knowledge. Or, for the knowable, it is the obscuration of wisdom. Because for the knowable, it is an obstacle to the arising of wisdom. The words between the knowable and the obscuration are not mentioned, like a jar of ghee. This is also non-afflictive ignorance. Those of the Bodhisattva lineage, by obtaining the perfect benefit of themselves and others, in order to attain Buddhahood, for all accumulations of merit and wisdom, one must strive diligently, because both of these become obstacles, therefore, it is considered the obscuration of those of the Bodhisattva lineage. Among them, pervasiveness means that everything is an object, and the so-called everything, if it is done to everything, then how can one know that everything is pervasive?

If so, what would it become? Because of everything, that is called the pervasive obscuration, because it is pointed out as the cause, so it would become that. Or, because the sound of "pervasive" is pointed out as the meaning of "complete," that is why it is said, "because of everything." "Partial" refers to the afflictive obscuration of those of the Hearer and so forth lineages. It is called "partial" because it only obscures the benefit of the self and is not pervasive. Do Hearers and Solitary Buddhas not have non-afflictive ignorance? If so, how is it that the afflictive obscuration itself is established for them? Although it exists, that is not their obscuration, because even with that, Hearers and Solitary Buddhas can attain enlightenment. Is ignorance not an obstacle to the arising of wisdom of Hearers and so forth on the object of the truth of suffering and so forth? Therefore, they would also have both obscurations. Therefore, it should not be said that Hearers and so forth only have afflictive obscurations. That is not so, because ignorance is of the same kind as affliction, is an aspect that is in accordance with wisdom, and is the root of samsara. It is established as the afflictive obscuration, not the obscuration of knowledge, like an illusion. For example, in order to thoroughly distinguish the collection of suffering, their obscuration is not another object called "knowable affliction." On another object, that is illusion itself, neither affliction nor doubt. Similarly, on the object itself of the truth of suffering and so forth, ignorance is not another object called ignorance and affliction. On another object, that is ignorance itself, not ignorance, not affliction. Therefore, that is called the obscuration of knowledge because it obscures wisdom from merely entering what is to be known, just like ignorance, afflictions, actions, and lives also arise. If so, would Bodhisattvas not be established as obscurations? That is not so, because Bodhisattvas thoroughly distinguish the collection of hearing, their obscuration is the obscuration of knowledge. As it is said: Wisdom
