Those who thus individually discern, this is called, O Protected One, truly discerning each of the dharmas. Likewise, by showing that the presence of awareness and its incompatible opposite are also devoid of the nature of complete imputation, the extremes of superimposition and denigration are abandoned. Whatever constantly distinguishes the aspects of the past, this is different from that, namely, the two extremes of discrimination are sevenfold in aspect. It is for the purpose of showing the distinctions of discrimination. For example, discriminating that things exist is also an extreme. Discriminating that things do not exist is also an extreme, it is said. If asked why this is so? Therefore, there is a person, and emptiness is for the sake of destroying it. Or, it is said that there is no selflessness either, so it is said. If the dharmas are empty by their own nature, then emptiness does not make them empty. Therefore, there is a person, and emptiness is for the sake of destroying it. Or, because there is no person, selflessness will also not exist, because the antidote is not an incompatible opposite. Therefore, one must inevitably know that there is a person or that selflessness does not exist either, if one says so, then that non-existence is also an extreme of discrimination. In order to abandon these two extremes of discriminating existence and non-existence, there is this Middle Way, for example, O Protected One, for the sake of destroying the person, it is not emptiness, but it is empty by emptiness, as is extensively stated in the sutras. In this regard, in order to destroy the person who is afflicted with all defilements, and in order to generate the purified person, it is not emptiness, but it is in order to generate the person, because there is nothing to be destroyed. Like an army and so on, because it exists nominally, it is empty by emptiness. It is not because of superimposing a person with the view of the aggregation of destruction, because that is completely non-existent. If this is done, then emptiness is not a thing by the nature of person and dharma, because it is separate from it. By the nature of perfect accomplishment, it is not that things do not exist. In order to show that emptiness is the nature of perfect accomplishment, it is said that the past extreme is empty, the future extreme is empty, the present arising is empty, that is to say, all three times are.

Also, it shows that it exists in the same way. Or, it also shows that it exists in the same way in the times of ordinary beings, learners, and non-learners. Among them, the time of ordinary beings is the initial extreme. The time of non-learners is the final extreme. The time of learners is the extreme that is currently arising. Because the nature of existing and not existing in that way is emptiness, therefore, Light Protector, one should rely on emptiness, it is said, showing that it is the realm of non-conceptual wisdom. To say that it is not for the person is merely a statement. Cessation is also an extreme of conceptualization. If so, therefore, it is said that because of the fear of emptiness due to the conceptualization of what should be abandoned and the one who abandons. Among them, cessation is what should be abandoned. The one who causes cessation is the one who abandons. Phenomena are the nature of what should be abandoned. Emptiness is the one who abandons, and after examining it, fear arises towards emptiness. If so, then the three defilements are what should be abandoned. If one sees that it is empty of inherent existence, then a person will not become what should be abandoned. If there is nothing to be abandoned, then there is no one who abandons, and thus fear of emptiness arises, and this is also an extreme. Why? Because phenomena such as form and feeling, as they appear in the nature of consciousness, are clung to as being substantially existent. Not realizing that form and so on, which are of the nature of what is completely imputed, are empty of inherent existence like a self, one fears emptiness. Therefore, in order to completely abandon those two extremes of conceptualization, for example, space. Light Protector, for example, if someone fears and is terrified of space, they beat their chest and say, "Space, sweep it away!" Light Protector, what do you think? Can space be swept away? He replied, "Bhagavan, that is impossible." The Bhagavan said, "Light Protector, similarly, any renunciant or Brahmin who fears emptiness, who is very afraid, I say, they have become greatly disturbed in mind. Why? Because, Light Protector, they practice emptiness."
