This great compassion accomplishes the pāramitā, therefore it is called the great compassion that accomplishes the pāramitā. Regarding the verses explaining the conditions for great compassion, the sūtra says: There are four conditions: the object, the dominant condition, the immediately preceding condition, and the causal condition. If asked, what are the object and other conditions of great compassion? One should contemplate this. All three types of feelings are object-conditions. Pleasant feeling has change-suffering as its object. Suffering has suffering's own nature as its object. Neither-suffering-nor-pleasure feeling has the suffering of conditioned existence as its object. This is the cause of pleasure and suffering, and also the cause of leading to them. Thus, the characteristic of neither-suffering-nor-pleasure feeling is: because it holds the place of both, is not liberated from the two, and is associated with impermanence, therefore neither-suffering-nor-pleasure feeling is described as feeling. Therefore, because it is the place where pleasure becomes suffering and is associated with it, it is not suffering. Neither-suffering-nor-pleasure feeling is shown as the object. The causal condition is the attachment to compassion. Constantly practicing compassion leaves imprints on the ālaya-vijñāna, this is the causal condition. Constantly practicing compassion due to the influence of a virtuous friend, this is the dominant condition. The collection of mind and mental factors arising before the arising of great compassion is the immediately preceding condition for the arising of great compassion. The phrase "because of its intention" should be understood as being for the sake of the bodhisattva. The phrase "because of having no object" is because one does not focus on self, others, or compassion. This is in the state of non-discrimination. Meditating on love and so on with one's own mind is the most excellent. The phrase "Meditating on love and so on with one's own mind is the most excellent" means that if one practices love with temporary material possessions, distinguishing between houses, villages, cities, and so on, then that is not excellent, only with one's own mind.

Whatever meditation on love and so forth is done in the mind, that is the most excellent and principal thing here. What is one's own mind like? To show that, from the aspect of faith in the Dharma, having heard the Dharma concerning the meaning of immeasurable from the Sutras and so forth, one sincerely believes in that Dharma from the depths of one's heart, and enters into the samadhi of love by focusing on all sentient beings. From the aspect of thought, it is through the nine thoughts of tasting flavors and so forth. From the aspect of power, it is love for immeasurable sentient beings. From the aspect of fully grasping the means of non-discriminating wisdom, and the differences in the actions of all Bodhisattvas, it is because all meanings are familiar and intimately mingled. The phrase "with great offerings" refers to the abundance obtained through pearls, lapis lazuli, Dharma robes, begging, and so forth. The phrase "with great reverence and exceedingly offering" is because of offering for the sake of truly accomplishing the meaning. "Constant" is a synonym for "always," because one always engages in offering to the Bhagavan and so forth, so this half-verse shows offering. "Always rely on a friend who has many virtues and benefits others," this speaks of relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. "By accomplishing compassion for beings, all merits will be obtained," this shows the immeasurable simply by acting with compassion. Therefore, this verse shows in a concise way the order and merits of the offering, reliance, and immeasurable qualities mentioned above. The order is shown in the way just described. The qualities are shown by "with great offerings and great reverence" and so forth. The phrase "having many qualities" refers to other qualities different from these, namely, "A spiritual friend is tamed, peaceful, and nearly peaceful, his virtues are superior, diligent, and rich in scripture. That one understands reality, is skilled in speaking, possesses a loving nature, abandons sorrow, and is relied upon." Because it is the occasion for compassion, "different from this" was mentioned. The occasion for offering, reliance, and the immeasurable is complete. After the immeasurable is the occasion for shame. What is the connection between this?
