Acquisition refers to robes and alms, etc., with which one makes offerings to the virtuous spiritual friend. Service refers to massaging, wiping, and washing, etc. Practice refers to practicing exactly as the virtuous spiritual friend has instructed, thereby practicing through practice; through practice, the virtuous spiritual friend will be honored. Likewise, the wise, regarding the Dharma, should approach the spiritual friend with knowledge or timely reverence. This indicates the desire to know everything; one approaches the virtuous spiritual friend with the intention of wanting to know everything, not with an arrogant or haughty attitude, nor for the sake of stealing the Dharma. 'Timely' indicates knowing the right time; one goes to the virtuous spiritual friend at the right time, not during meals or other such times. 'Reverence' means abandoning pride and approaching with a humble mind. That is, without desire for service and gain, one relies entirely for the sake of practice. This means one relies on the virtuous spiritual friend for the purpose of practice, not for the sake of gain and honor. May I become accomplished in virtuous dharmas, and not for the sake of gain, honor, verses, etc. Purifying the field is also for the sake of training, but it does not mean training the pure land. What then? Just as the Buddha's pure land is completely pure, so too shall I completely purify it. This means, wise one, cause and effect. Relying on the virtuous spiritual friend, with faith, is the cause of arising as it is. What arises now is the effect. That itself is the cause of the future; this is the distinction between cause and effect. By following the path of Dharma, one relies on the spiritual friend; following the path of Dharma is the samadhi of the stream of Dharma. When one meets the virtuous spiritual friend and obtains that samadhi, and repeatedly meditates on that stream of Dharma, then one will have served the virtuous spiritual friend. Wise one, through application and conduct, and through the gateway of faith, the distinction between distance and proximity...

ste. It should be combined as before. That which is called the severance of characteristics is far. That which is immediately after is near. That which is to be combined at another time is far. That which is to be combined at that time is near. To pray for which image is most conducive to combining with a virtuous friend is far. To pray for which action is near. Relying on the excellent virtuous friend is as before, it is said that one should know that relying on virtuous friends with one's own mind through five aspects is excellent. For example, having faith and aspiration for the Dharma of the Great Vehicle that possesses the teachings, the nine aspirations, tasting, rejoicing, the aspiration of manifest joy being pure, not knowing satisfaction, vast, joyful, beneficial, undefiled, virtuous aspirations, etc., and also freedom, such as the samadhi of the Treasury of Space, and completely holding the means of non-discriminating wisdom, and all the great Bodhisattvas, from the gate of entering into the same meaning, because all meanings are mixed, and close to being mixed. That is the yoga of the mind, called whether it is aspiration or meditation. The method of distinguishing the immeasurable is the means of not being weary of doing other things, Bodhisattvas abide in the abodes of Brahma, and will not become weary of doing other things. Equanimity is the aspect of accomplishing the absence of all afflictions for sentient beings in those feelings, called the aspect of accomplishing the absence of all afflictions, is the aspect of accomplishing the absence of all afflictions, thinking that these sentient beings should not arise the faults of attachment and anger towards these feelings. Absence of characteristics is entering into Suchness, because there is no discrimination in those. Because it is similar to absence of characteristics, it is absence of characteristics, called alas, happiness! Suffering! May there be joy, and sentient beings! Because it is said that these are non-discriminating and become one, therefore at that time the characteristics of those collections of mind and mental factors that are individually determined are not, therefore it is non-
