When the mind is distracted and outwardly scattered, it is impossible to attain samadhi. The opposite of wisdom is perverse wisdom. In order to increase wisdom, not diligently attending to and serving virtuous spiritual friends is clinging to the opposite of wisdom. The opposite of that is non-attachment, as it is said: Whoever recites, writes, and practices, Asks others and listens, and retains it in their mind, Their wisdom, like the rays of the sun, Opens like a lotus. This is how it is said. Under the detailed classification is the chapter on qualities, each of the perfections such as generosity has four qualities. The four qualities are vastness, purity, great benefit, and inexhaustibility. Among these, the first root verse explains the vastness of the perfection of generosity. How is it explained? As it says: When the sons of the Buddhas meet beggars, they always give away even their own lives. This shows that. Since it has been proclaimed that one's own life is given away, what need is there to mention external objects? As the venerable master Makhol said: If you have given away your own flesh, What need is there to mention other things? This is how it is said. Giving away one's own life is not done occasionally, but only when the beggar needs life, it is given without hesitation. Since giving away one's own life has been mentioned, giving away limbs and possessions is beyond question. This explains the vastness of generosity. With compassion, one does not expect anything in return from others, nor does one seek the fruit. This shows the purity of generosity, the mindstream is moistened with compassion, one even gives away one's own life to beggars, and does not expect anything in return from them, nor does one seek fruits such as power. If generosity is done with the expectation of return or the pursuit of fruit, then that generosity is controlled by existence. Generosity controlled by existence is a fault that leads to falling into samsara, and it is a stain on a Bodhisattva. The opposite of that is

It is without fault. This second root explains the absence of the defilement of giving, because it is completely seized by compassion. By that very giving, all beings are placed in the three enlightenments. This is said to show the great meaning of giving, because all beings are placed in the three enlightenments according to their respective capacities. If any vehicle is completely abandoned, or if any sentient being is completely abandoned, it will not become a great meaning, therefore all beings are also mentioned, and all three vehicles are also mentioned. In the world, it is placed inexhaustibly. This is said to fully show the inexhaustible nature of giving. How is it? For the time being, if worldly people give as giving, if a Bodhisattva also gives in the same way, then because power and the heavenly realms and beauty, etc., are also possessed, they will fall into samsara, which will be exhausted by the exhaustion of ripening. However, like a Shravaka, fearing samsara and turning away from samsara, focusing on nirvana and giving for self-liberation, that too will be exhausted by the exhaustion of nirvana without remainder of the aggregates. Therefore, Bodhisattvas completely abandon both of those and give by being completely seized by non-discriminating wisdom. Precisely because of this, by the gate of not abiding in samsara and nirvana, the inexhaustible nature is shown, and the same should be applied to discipline, etc. The sons of the Buddha are extremely difficult to do, and thus endure all the harms of humans. This is called endurance that does not care about suffering, when vigorously engaging in the meaning of sentient beings, one does not care about the sufferings that arise, and without placing those sufferings in mind, one engages in the actions of the meaning of sentient beings. Thus, enduring all the harms of humans is called endurance without aversion to those who harm, to all those sentient beings who strike with sticks and weapons and fists, etc., one endures with love like a single child. For the Dharma, the endurance of certain realization is only to be seen as included in this.

This should be done. The sons of the Victorious Ones, with the nature of donning armor, exert unparalleled diligence. This shows the diligence of donning armor, and it itself shows the vastness of diligence. The very fact of being unparalleled distinguishes the diligence of a Bodhisattva from that of worldly people, Hearers, and Solitary Buddhas. If one asks, how is the armor-like diligence of a Bodhisattva unparalleled? As it is said in the noble *Inexhaustible Intellect Sutra*: "Venerable Shariputra, what is the inexhaustible armor of a Bodhisattva? It is that which is never weary in samsara, that is, donning armor for so many eons, not seeking enlightenment by counting eons, but only wearing inconceivable armor." Such statements and the like explain the vastness of diligence. Destroying the multitude of one's own and others' afflictions, one obtains supreme enlightenment. This shows the diligence of application that is without entanglement. How is it without entanglement? It is because one strives for the sake of completely destroying one's own and others' afflictions, and for the sake of unsurpassed enlightenment. Since it is not possessed by craving, it completely destroys afflictions, and therefore it is without entanglement. Any diligence that is possessed by craving for things and views that I own is entangled. How is this the diligence of application? As it is said in the noble *Inexhaustible Intellect Sutra* itself, it is established in the position of the diligence of application. What is the inexhaustible overcoming of a Bodhisattva? It is the joy of surpassing even a great trichiliocosm filled with fire and looking upon the Thus-Gone One, this is the overcoming of a Bodhisattva. The joy that is the cause of listening to the sacred Dharma is the overcoming of a Bodhisattva. The joy that is the cause of fully ripening sentient beings is the overcoming of a Bodhisattva, unrelaxed, undiminished, steadfast, irreversible, with virtuous thoughts, relying on great compassion.
