The teachings given on the ground are briefly shown in one verse, namely, focusing on higher ethical discipline, it says, "Diligently apply yourself to your own benefit." The training of higher ethical discipline is the bodhisattva's vows, which are for the bodhisattva's own benefit. To the bodhisattva who diligently practices this, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, say, "Excellent! Excellent!" and truly praise and extol them. Those who practice incorrectly, are lazy, and do not diligently practice are rebuked. Focusing on higher mind and higher wisdom, it says, "Diligently take up abiding and discernment." Tranquility, abiding, and samadhi are synonyms. Discernment is a synonym for insight. "What is abandoned and relied upon" refers to abandoning the dharmas that are associated with obstacles and relying on what is conducive. "That is the utterly pure view" refers to mirror-like wisdom and so on. "Non-conceptual Bodhi" means with non-conceptual wisdom. Mirror-like wisdom and so on are free from concepts. "Great darkness" refers to the obscuration of knowledge, which obscures the great collection of knowable things. After that darkness is dispelled by these wisdoms, it illuminates beings like the rising of a great sun. "Like the rising of a great sun" is an analogy of the sun. If there were a sun that could illuminate all beings in the three thousand great thousand worlds, and always illuminate them, never setting, then the bodhisattva is like that sun, dispelling the great darkness—the obscuration of knowledge—and illuminating all beings with the rays of wisdom. The occasion of the subsequent instruction of the advice is complete. After the occasion of the subsequent instruction of the advice, is the occasion of the action with skillful means. What is the connection here? Because it is said, "What is the training," therefore, now it is necessary to say what the object is that is approached by these aspects, so the distinction of the training will be stated next. So, what is the training? What is its distinction?

Teaching is accomplishing one's own work. Its distinction is being uncommon. Accomplishing one's own work, here there are common and distinct aspects. Among them, the common aspect is to make the activity manifest, truly and without reversal, which is what is said to be the activity with skillful means. Its commonality lies in the fact that making the activity manifest is universally applicable to all virtuous deeds. The distinction is like the perfections that will be explained. In what is called "the classification of activities with skillful means," the classification of activities with skillful means enters in this way: Therefore, this is to truly grasp its means, the activities are pure and limitless, and one goes beyond to the other shore. It is like what will be explained. For example, it is like being the basis for counting sentient and non-sentient beings. Mentioning sentient beings includes all those counted as sentient beings, and it shows that they are those who can be approached. Those counted as non-sentient beings are forests, mountains, rivers, and so on, showing that they are to be approached. What is stable is mountains and so on, and what is unstable is rivers and so on. Just as these are all the basis, the basis for generosity and other virtuous perfections, and for things that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment, is also the three actions of body, speech, and mind. This is the means for virtuous action, just as forests and so on grow relying on the earth, all virtuous dharmas also rely on the three actions of body, speech, and mind. Without the three actions of body, speech, and mind, no virtuous dharma arises. Having understood that it is a means in this way, bodhisattvas enter in order to completely tame the three actions, so it is called the means of arising. "Extremely difficult activities are diverse in nature, completed after many eons, and have the nature of prior diligence." Among them, the activities that bodhisattvas are extremely happy with, which are diverse in nature, are the perfection of generosity and so on, and the activities of gathering and so on. The activities of generosity and so on, the excellent limbs, the head, hands, feet, eyes, and so on, are completely given away, and those diverse activities that are especially practiced.
