Whatever becomes a cause for joy, wherever it may be, that kind of cause is what constitutes the accumulation of merit. The causes of immeasurability, samadhi, and wisdom are accumulated in such a way that they become the cause of establishing anything beforehand. Establishing it correctly means accomplishing all purposes. Because of closely examining the nature of ignorance and enlightenment, it is said that whatever the nature of ignorance and enlightenment is, that ignorance itself is enlightenment. Thus, ignorance and enlightenment are closely examined because the dharma and the possessor of dharma are not different. If one engages properly only with desire and so on, one will be liberated from them. If it is said like that, how does one engage properly? All the afflictive dharmas such as desire are unwholesome, the root of suffering, accompanied by epidemics, and accompanied by strife. If there are places of true origin such as desire, then suffering such as birth will arise, so these should be abandoned and discarded, and it should be known that they have become the opposite of wholesome dharmas. Then, if one properly cultivates proper attention and so on, one will abandon them, and thus one will be liberated. There is no obstruction between the stainless and vast expanse of enlightenment. It is called stainless because the afflictions and cognitive obscurations, along with their habitual tendencies, have been abandoned. It is vast because all knowable things are its objects. The mind of other-dependence is not always naturally luminous, because that mind arises and ceases in a single moment together with contaminated dharmas such as desire and faith, and because it is also connected with contaminated dharmas from beginningless time to all afflictions, therefore it is unreasonable for the mind of other-dependence to be always luminous. The nature of the mind is always luminous, and there it is never disturbed by the sequence of arising and ceasing together with the contaminated dharmas of samsara. Therefore, it is said that only it is always luminous. Benefit sentient beings

Therefore, he does not fall into transgression due to attachment. As it is said, the loving-kindness of a Bodhisattva towards sentient beings is here regarded as attachment. As it is said, the loving-kindness and joy of a Bodhisattva towards sentient beings is beneficial for the purpose of maturing sentient beings. Therefore, the transgression committed by him towards them is prohibited. The transgression arising from anger has many faults. Thus, the fault of the mind is by nature a flaw. Thus, for the time being, for a Bodhisattva who has renounced the world, a transgression arising from attachment is not established in relation to all sentient beings. The attachment made with love by a Bodhisattva householder towards his children, wife, etc., is also not very faulty, because attachment does not completely abandon sentient beings, while anger is the nature of abandonment. Therefore, for a Bodhisattva, only the transgression committed by anger is established, not that arising from attachment. Why? Because it is for the sake of meaning. It is said that the subsequent illusory mind is contradictory. Illusion is deception. Thus, wanting to accomplish meaning, but deceiving others with deception, illusion, fraud, and means, etc., is contradictory. Just as a sick person examines and takes good medicine, even if it is bitter and hot, etc., individually, so too, a Bodhisattva examines samsara individually and enters without completely abandoning it. This should be connected in this way. Just as a doctor subdues a patient because he wants to benefit him, so too, a Bodhisattva, like a doctor who wants to benefit, subdues sentient beings who are like patients. Just as a lord subdues an unaccomplished servant in order to accomplish him, so too, a Bodhisattva subdues his own nature, imputing self to the mind. He subdues in order to accomplish the unaccomplished mind. As it is said in the Holy Jewel Heap Sutra: "Light Protector, just as a skilled horse trainer cuts off the sores or unruly behavior of a horse wherever they occur, so too, a Bhikshu yogi, wherever he sees the mind changing, in that very place."
