The verses on refuting stinginess are meant to show how bodhisattvas, when teaching the Dharma, have no occasion for stinginess at all. Bodhisattvas, with compassion, even give away their lives and possessions, which are obtained with great effort, let alone things that are meaningless. They give to sentient beings who are suffering. It is said that even if resources are exhausted, suffering will occur, and even if life is exhausted, death will occur. Therefore, one cannot give away what will be exhausted. But one's mind will not be discouraged with regard to what can be given away without being exhausted. Dharma, even if given away, will not be exhausted, but will increase like lighting a candle from another candle. Possessions must also be obtained with great effort, and even a human life is obtained with hundreds and thousands of wishes. Since one can completely give away one's body and possessions, which are obtained with such great effort, why not give away the Dharma, which is not obtained with such great effort? Dharma is even more difficult to obtain than life and possessions. Therefore, even for half a verse, a bodhisattva will completely give up himself. As it is said, "Even half a verse of well-spoken words is accomplished by the kindness of one's own body." And as it is said, "Even for one verse, I would gladly throw myself from the world of Brahma into a pit of fire." Therefore, how can one say that something so difficult to obtain is "easy to obtain"? It should not be understood in that way. From the time the Buddha appeared until the Dharma remains, the sacred Dharma is not obtained with great effort. Because the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, go to those who are to be tamed, and after going, they consider the place and time, and even teach sentient beings what they do not want to hear. Therefore, it is said that it is not obtained with great effort. The vast Dharma is the Dharma of the Great Vehicle. Why is it said that the Bhagavan did not teach the Dharma that is self-realized? Because the Dharma is to be realized by each individual, therefore the Bhagavan...

Because there is no teaching, teaching the Dharma is meaningless. The Dharma that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have understood in their hearts, the state that each individual should realize for themselves, that which each individual should realize for themselves cannot be taught to others. The sound called "fire" cannot express the nature of fire itself. If the sound called "fire" were to express the nature of fire, then when the sound called "fire" is uttered, the mouth would burn. Although language cannot express the nature of all phenomena, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, speak words that are in accordance with it. By teaching the Dharma, they cause disciples to generate realization on the Dharma that each individual should realize for themselves. Therefore, it is said: By explaining the Dharma with reason, it guides beings towards their own Dharma. In this way, by teaching the Dharma that is explained with reason, it guides the world towards its own Dharma. Therefore, teaching the Dharma is not meaningless. One's own Dharma is the teaching of the Bhagavat, which enables beings to abide in it. Alternatively, one's own Dharma is entering the teaching. After entering, one attains realization through the sequence of hearing, thinking, and meditating. Therefore, teaching the Dharma does not become meaningless. How does teaching the Dharma not become meaningless? It is shown by half of the second verse. If one can see the meaning by merely hearing, then meditation becomes meaningless. If seeing the meaning, it means that if one can manifest and realize the meaning that can only be manifested through realization by merely hearing, then meditation would also become meaningless. Because that meaning is manifested through meditation, meditation does not become meaningless. Therefore, the teaching of the Sugata is also not meaningless. How does the teaching not become meaningless? It is shown by the last line, "If one can meditate without hearing, then the teaching becomes meaningless." Without hearing, one cannot meditate. Therefore, teaching the Dharma is not meaningless. As it is said in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*:
