The reason for calling it "thus" is that there is no difference between liberation and liberation, therefore the vehicle is applied to liberation as a proximate cause, because of establishing the nature. Because of the difference in lineage, it is called the one vehicle, because of the difference in definite lineage, and because of the difference in indefinite lineage. Those of indefinite lineage, if they practice the conduct of the Hearers, then later through encountering virtuous friends, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, become practitioners of the Hearers' conduct, they will definitely arise from the Great Vehicle. Therefore, those who have practiced the conduct of the Hearers will definitely arise from the Great Vehicle, so it is the one vehicle, because the vehicle is applied to the lineage as a proximate cause. Because of obtaining two thoughts, it is called the one vehicle, the Buddhas have obtained the thought of self-nature for all sentient beings, because when the Bodhisattva obtains the first ground, the thought of self and other being equal that is obtained for sentient beings, will become extremely pure at the time of Buddhahood, because they will think that they themselves are those sentient beings. Those who are determined to be of the Hearer lineage, who have previously accumulated the accumulations of Bodhi, refer to those of the Hearer lineage who have previously practiced the conduct of Bodhisattvas, because they are determined to be of the Hearer lineage, therefore Bodhi

Therefore, in order for the Hearers of that Bhagavan Buddha to attain the same mind, it is the One Vehicle. For the sake of the ultimate, it is also the One Vehicle. That which has no further path to traverse is the Vehicle, therefore only the Buddha is the One Vehicle. For example: Those covered by the evil sound of the ocean, however many archers there are, in the presence of the one skilled in archery, know them to be women. It is said like this: There is only one man, and there is no one stronger than him. Similarly, the ultimate of all vehicles is the Great Vehicle, because there is no other superior vehicle beyond that, so it is the One Vehicle. What are the undetermined ones of the Hearer lineage? If it is said to be of the Hearer lineage, and also said to be undetermined, what does this mean? Those are not merely Hearers. Then what are they? Some of the undetermined lineage practice the conduct of Hearers, therefore they are called the Hearer lineage. The undetermined ones of the Bodhisattva lineage should also be applied in the same way. Furthermore, why do the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abandon the undetermined ones? Because they are completely devoted to the conduct of Hearers, and not to the conduct of Bodhisattvas. In order to determine the situation, they are left in equanimity. Before reaching that situation, the undetermined ones cannot practice the conduct of Bodhisattvas. As the venerable Arya Makola said: Without reaching the edge of the precipice, one will not become wealthy, and so on. There are also two types of undetermined Hearers: those who have seen the meaning of the Vehicle and those who have not seen the meaning of the Vehicle. This means those who have seen the truth and those who have not seen the truth. Transforming the Noble Path into arising is inconceivable, which means, if one hates the arising of the Noble Path, how can it be transformed into arising? If that is true, then it is not arising solely from the Noble Path. Then what is it? It is arising from those who have not abandoned the remaining afflictions. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are of undetermined lineage.
