Thinking that one will obtain fruit, the food eaten for the purpose of nourishing the body will become merit, but it will not become a great source of merit. Similarly, compared to having faith in the Dharma of the Hearer Vehicle, listening to or reciting even one verse that teaches the Great Vehicle Dharma, which is the basis for benefiting others, the merit is far greater than that, just as it is said in the Great Vehicle scriptures, it will not become a great source of merit. Therefore, in the phrase, "The excellent Great Vehicle Dharma is vast and profound," vast refers to the Great Vehicle, because it proclaims countless sutra collections. Regarding "By what, by whom, and by what kind of faith, can one fully obtain what kind of fruit," "what" refers to the vast Great Vehicle Dharma. "Whom" refers to the bodhisattva who possesses wisdom. "What kind of faith" refers to the vast faith that will not completely degenerate, which is what is meant by great faith. "What kind of fruit can one fully obtain" refers to fully obtaining the three kinds of fruits, such as increasing vast merit. After the section on faith is the section on seeking the Dharma completely. What is the connection between these? Because so much has already been said, the bodhisattva should completely seek the Dharma. So, what is the target of completely seeking the Dharma? Therefore, it is said, "The three baskets or two baskets are both acceptable." Among the twelve branches that belong to the Holy Teachings, the extremely vast Sutra section and the Jataka section are the three baskets of the bodhisattva. The rest are mostly the three baskets of the Hearers. The reason for saying "mostly" is that some branches are common to the Great Vehicle and the Hearer Vehicle. This is also the three baskets or two baskets. Why is it called "basket"? The answer is: because it is a collection, because it collects all meanings. For example, some places can hold ten "bre", and because it collects ten "bre" it is called "basket", similarly, here too, because it collects all knowable meanings it is called "basket". Why are there three? "Due to reverence" refers to the Sutra collection and the Dharma

In Abhidharma and Vinaya, there are individually doubts and two extremes, as well as holding onto views, etc. Each also has separate causes for doubts and two extremes. Any sutra, regarding any meaning about which there is doubt, is taught in order to ascertain that meaning. The statement "Regarding any meaning about which there is doubt, it is for dispelling that doubt" means that for those who have doubts about the self and common characteristics of the aggregates, elements, sense bases, as well as dependent origination, truths, grounds, perfections, etc., in order to dispel doubts, and to be in accordance with this, the sutra is taught in a supplementary way, therefore, the sutra is taught as an antidote to doubt. The antidote to being connected with the two extremes is the Vinaya, that is, through the path of being difficult to fully practice and having faults. The statement "Connected with the two extremes" means being connected with the decline of desirable qualities and the exhaustion of oneself. Being connected with the decline of desirable qualities, for example, like a desirous person fully enjoying, the Blessed One established the basis of training, exceeding that basis, and enjoying through accumulation, etc., for the purpose of one's own obesity, etc., this is its antidote. If someone forbids enjoyment, like that, if one extends and completely abandons it, with great respect, respecting the established places of training, in this way, the enjoyment with faults is prohibited. The antidote to the extreme of being connected with the exhaustion of oneself is enjoyment without faults. How the Blessed One allowed without faults, one enjoys in that way, not making oneself exhausted by three or six days of hunger and complete hunger, etc., as the Blessed One said: For a monk who is endowed with discipline and qualities, I also give food with a hundred flavors and a hundred thousand clothes. When eating those foods, if one is not attached, and does not eat for the purpose of obesity, etc., if it is like that, then enjoyment without faults becomes the antidote to the extreme of being connected with the exhaustion of oneself. Through the Vinaya, Dharma and meaning can be accomplished, because one diligently strives to subdue afflictions.

In order to realize these two, subduing afflictions refers to contemplating ugliness, etc., on afflictions such as desire. How does one realize Dharma and meaning? Dharma is composed of collections of names, etc. Meaning is what is expressed by these. If one sees names as accidental to meaning and meaning as accidental to names, and if one holds that meaning is not the essence of names and names are not the essence of meaning, then by striving diligently in this way, one will realize Dharma and meaning. Alternatively, by gradually possessing discipline, freedom from regret, etc., in order to realize Suchness, one will realize Dharma and meaning in accordance with reality, thus accomplishing Dharma and meaning. Hearing is from the mind through the door of habituation. This means it is through the door of habituation, having obtained the concordant cause of the extremely pure realm of Dharma. Thinking is through the door of making one realize. This means that however one thinks, that is how one will realize. Having realized, possessing wisdom, and striving diligently in meditation, one will attain tranquility, and thus, with the power of meditation, one will pacify all afflictions. If one abides in equipoise, one will realize Suchness, knowing truly and completely the reality of insight. In this way, one will also liberate sentient beings, and even attain Buddhahood. Place means where, by whom, and for whom it is taught. This means that three kinds of places are taught. Among these, where means, as it is said in other sutras, "Thus I have heard, at one time the Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagriha," like this, it indicates the very place of Rajagriha and so forth. By whom means the Blessed One indicates the very place. For whom means for which person the Dharma is taught, it indicates the very place of the speaker. The characteristics of conventional truth and the characteristics of ultimate truth. This means that explaining things like pots, cloths, and persons is conventional truth, and whatever relies on speech and things different from it, or whatever is the object of the senses, is conventional truth.
