The generation of bodhicitta, endowed with the perfection of the earth, is like the king of medicine because it completely pacifies all diseases of afflictions and cognitive obscurations by means of gentleness, thought, meditation, etc., and by means of completely suppressing and abandoning them. Having the immeasurable is like a great friend, meaning: having love, compassion, joy, and equanimity, one will never abandon any sentient being in all circumstances, because one focuses on all states of happiness, suffering, and neither happiness nor suffering. Having a teacher is like a great king, because it is the cause of not being wasted, meaning: for example, a king treats those who belong to his own lineage with respect and disrespect. Similarly, gradually, it is the cause of waste and the cause of not being wasted, and the generation of bodhicitta with reliance is also the cause of waste and the cause of not being wasted. How is it the cause of waste? How is it the cause of not being wasted? If one relies on the individual, the words, the sutra with the meaning of honesty, and the consciousness, it is the cause of waste. Conversely, it becomes the cause of not being wasted, so it is called the cause of not being wasted. Having calm abiding and insight is like a vehicle, meaning that when the special qualities of the mind arise in union, therefore having calm abiding and insight, at that time the Bodhisattva can easily bear the burden of sentient beings, so it is called a vehicle. Having dharani and confidence is like a reservoir, which holds water and produces it inexhaustibly, and the Dharma-related hearing and unheard Dharma and meaning, which holds and produces inexhaustibly, meaning that by the power of dharani one can hold the heard Dharma and meaning, and by the power of confidence one can hold the unheard Dharma and meaning, so it is called like a reservoir, and in the upper regions, water pits are called reservoirs. Having the ability to teach the Dharma is like a pleasant sound, because it makes the pleasant sound heard to the trainable beings who desire liberation.

The reason for saying this is that after hearing "All conditioned phenomena are impermanent, are suffering, are without self, and Nirvana is peace," those who desire liberation are like being satisfied with nectar, so it is called like a sound of universal joy. When one obtains the tolerance of non-arising dharmas, it is because it arises naturally. The reason for saying this is that on the eighth bhumi, the Bodhisattva, for all dharmas, is unborn, and the wisdom arising from maturation arises naturally, so one knows all dharmas. Even at the time of realizing the first bhumi, one knows it in this way, but on the eighth bhumi, like a large ship sent into the ocean, it is in accordance with the Dharma, because one has obtained the path that arises naturally, so it is called the tolerance of non-arising dharmas. Just as all the perfections of the vessel world arise from the clouds, the reason for saying this is that just as all the perfections of the vessel world on the earth, such as grains, medicines, forests, etc., arise from the clouds. Similarly, all the perfections of the sentient world, such as being filled with the heavens and liberation, also arise from the Bodhicitta that is skilled in the means of wisdom and compassion, so it is like a cloud. This Bodhicitta, which has twenty-two metaphors, should be understood as being combined with the inexhaustibility mentioned in the Sutra Taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect. The reason for saying this is that in the Sutra Taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, the generation of Bodhicitta, intention, application, superior intention, Paramitas, immeasurables, superknowledges, the objects of gathering, specific correct knowledge, reliance, merit, the accumulation of wisdom, that which is in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment, Shamatha, Vipassana, Dharani, fearlessness, teaching the Dharma, the one vehicle path, skillful means, and so forth, arise in sequence. Just as it has been said, these Bodhicittas should also be combined in this sequence. Because there is no fear of falling into the lower realms and complete aversion, the verses praising the generation of Bodhicitta, that is, at the same time as generating Bodhicitta, this mind should be praised by all beings.
