What it is. The obscuration of combination is what is left over. The obscuration to attainment is what is equal. The obscuration to attaining something special is what is accepting and abandoning. The obscuration to correct combination is what are the nine types of obscurations of afflictions. The obscuration to the cause is what is the obscuration to the ten types of virtues, etc., because it is the occasion of the meaning of the cause. The obscuration to entering into that alone is what is the obscuration to all aspects of enlightenment. The obscuration to unsurpassed virtue is what is the obscuration to the perfections. The obscuration to going to that especially is what is the obscuration to the grounds. The obscuration of the condensed is what are the two types of condensed. Commentary on the chapter on obscurations from the treatise Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, called the second. Having made that alone the authority, it was said: The root nature is that alone, The non-inverted nature is the nature, The fruit and cause are that alone, The gross and the subtle, Fame and the completely pure object, The nature of collecting and separating, The wise one, those ten alone, Are the antidotes to the view of self. These are the ten aspects of that alone, namely: the root Thatness, the Thatness of characteristics, the Thatness of non-perversion, the Thatness of cause and effect, the Thatness of coarse and subtle, the Thatness of fame, the Thatness of the sphere of complete purity, the Thatness of collection, the Thatness of complete differentiation, and the Thatness of the wise. Those ten aspects are also to be known as the antidotes to the ten types of grasping at self. That is, being skilled in the aggregates, being skilled in the elements, being skilled in the sense bases, being skilled in dependent origination, being skilled in what is and is not, being skilled in the faculties, being skilled in time, being skilled in the truths, being skilled in the vehicles, and being skilled in conditioned and unconditioned dharmas. Among these, the root Thatness is the three natures: the completely imputed, the other-powered, and the thoroughly established. Because Thatness is established as other within them. Why is it that here the three natures are considered to be Thatness?

The three self-natures, such as impermanence, although they exist, are not unique, etc. Because existence and non-existence are the only ones, the self-nature is established as having three types. The characteristic of the completely imputed is that it is always non-existent. That is called the thusness of the completely imputed self-nature, because it is not reversed. The characteristic of the dependent nature is that although it exists, it is not truly real, because it is deluded. Therefore, the self-nature of the dependent nature is called thusness. The characteristic of the thoroughly established is the thusness of existence and non-existence. Therefore, this is the thusness of the thoroughly established self-nature. What is the thusness of the characteristic? On this, dharma and individuals, as well as what is grasped and what grasps, superimpose existence and non-existence, and observe with slander. Whoever knows this will not arise. That is the characteristic of thusness. Whoever knows this will not arise with superimposition and slanderous observation on individuals and dharmas. That is the characteristic of the thusness of the self-nature of the completely imputed. Whoever knows this will not arise with superimposition and slanderous observation on what is grasped and what grasps. That is the characteristic of the thusness of the self-nature of the dependent nature. Whoever knows this will not arise with superimposition and slanderous observation on real things and unreal things. That is the characteristic of the thusness of the self-nature of the thoroughly established. The thusness of the root and the thusness of the characteristic, which is the thusness that has never been reversed, is called the thusness of the characteristic. The thusness that has never been reversed is the antidote to the reversal of permanence, such as impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. How should impermanence and so on be understood in the thusness of the root? The meaning of impermanence is the meaning of non-existence, the characteristic of arising and ceasing, the meaning of being with defilement and without defilement, in the thusness of the root, in order. The meaning of impermanence has three aspects: the meaning of non-existence, the meaning of arising and ceasing, and the meaning of being with defilement and without defilement, which are the three self-natures in the thusness of the root, in order. Suffering, taking, and characteristics are thought to be different relationships. Because of attachment to individuals and dharmas, taking closely, taking closely
