Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, by Vasubandhu. Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes By Vasubandhu In Sanskrit: Madhyāntavibhāgaṭīkā. (Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes). Volume 1. Homage to youthful Manjushri! This treatise, the excellent author, Sugata, Svayambhu, etc., in the exposition also from the manifest offering, for the sake of distinguishing the meanings, one should strive. Therein, first of all, the body of the treatise is established: characteristic, obscuration, that very nature, the antidote is meditation, its place and the attainment of the fruit, the unsurpassed vehicle. These seven meanings are explained in this treatise. That is to say: characteristic, obscuration, that very nature, antidote meditation, the place of that very antidote meditation, the attainment of the fruit, and the unsurpassed vehicle, these are the seven meanings. Therein, starting from the characteristic: unreal imagination exists, in it the two do not exist, emptiness exists in this, in that also that exists. Thus it is said. Therein, the unreal imagination is the discrimination of the apprehended and the apprehender. The two are devoid of the object of the apprehended and the apprehender. Emptiness is the very nature of the unreal imagination, devoid of the object of the apprehended and the apprehender. In that also that exists, which is the unreal imagination. Thus, where something is absent, it is seen as empty of that, truly and correctly. Whatever remains in this, is known to be present here, truly and correctly. Thus, the characteristic of emptiness is shown without perversion. Not empty, not non-empty, therefore all is explained, by existence, by non-existence, by existence, that is the Middle Way. Not empty means by emptiness and unreal imagination. Not non-empty means the two, the apprehended and the apprehender. All means the unreal imagination, which is conditioned, and emptiness, which is unconditioned. Explained means shown. By existence means real.

It is the non-true pervasive imagination. 'Because of absence' is the second. 'Because of presence' means that in the non-true pervasive imagination, there is emptiness, and in it, there is also the non-true pervasive imagination. 'That is the Middle Way' means that it is not that everything is entirely empty, nor is it entirely non-empty. Thus, this is in accordance with what appears in the Prajñāpāramitā and others, that 'all this is neither empty nor non-empty.' Thus, having stated the characteristics of the presence and absence of the non-true pervasive imagination, now its own characteristics are stated. 'Object and sentient being, self, consciousness, the consciousness that appears, arises greatly, it is meaningless, because of its absence, that too is absent.' Among them, 'appearing as an object' means whatever appears as things like form. 'Appearing as a sentient being' means whatever appears in the five senses, in the continuums of self and others. 'Appearing as self' is the afflicted mind, because it is similar to being deluded about self and so on. 'Appearing as consciousness' means the six consciousnesses. 'It is meaningless' means that objects and things that appear as sentient beings are absent, and self and things that appear as consciousness are false appearances. Because it is meaningless, the consciousness that grasps is also absent. The non-true pervasive imagination, it is established because of that. It is neither like that nor completely non-existent. Thus, however it appears to arise, it is not like that. Because it arises merely as a delusion, it is also not completely non-existent. Why is it not desired that it be completely non-existent? Thus, it is desired that liberation occurs after it is exhausted. Otherwise, bondage and liberation would not be accomplished, and there would be the fault of slandering complete affliction and complete purification. Thus, having shown the self-characteristics of the non-true pervasive imagination, if the non-true pervasive imagination were merely exhausted, then how would it be gathered into the three natures? Showing the characteristics of gathering, it is said: 'The imputed and the other-powered, and also the thoroughly established nature, because of meaning, because of non-true imputation, it is said because the two are absent.' Thus it is said. Among them,
