And feeling is the cause of near conduct. Craving, grasping, and existence are the causes of accumulation. Birth and old age and death are the causes of sorrow. All these pervasive afflictions arise from unreal pervasive thoughts. The meaning of unreal pervasive thoughts is summarized as: the nature of existence, the nature of non-existence, the nature of self, the nature of accumulation, the nature of the means of entering into the nature of non-existence, the nature of extreme division, the nature of names, the nature of entering, and the nature of pervasive afflictions. These are the nine natures that are taught. Having thus spoken of unreal pervasive thoughts, it is shown how emptiness is to be known: Emptiness, in short, is to be known as nature, names, its meaning, distinctions, and proofs. How is nature to be known? The nature of emptiness is the absence of two realities and the absence of reality. The two, the object of grasping and the grasper, do not exist, and the object of that which does not exist is the nature of emptiness. Thus, the nature of non-existence is fully revealed as the nature of emptiness. What is the nature of non-existence? It is neither existent nor non-existent. How is it not existent? Because the object of these two does not exist. How is it not non-existent? Because the object of the object of these two is the nature of emptiness. Therefore, unreal pervasive thought and the nature of difference and unity are not. If it is different, then it is not permissible for a dharma to have a dharma nature that is other, like impermanence and suffering. If it is one, then it does not become a pure object of focus and a general nature. Therefore, by that, the nature of emptiness, which is completely liberated from itself and others, is fully revealed. How are names to be known? Emptiness, in short, is suchness, the ultimate reality, signlessness, the ultimate meaning, and the realm of dharma are names. How is the meaning of names to be known? It is neither different nor inverted.

It is the realm of noble ones, and because it is the cause of the Dharma of noble ones, the meanings of the names are in order. Because it is not other, it is Suchness, because it is always thus. Because it is not inverted, it is the ultimate reality, because it is not the basis of inversion. Because it prevents characteristics, it is without characteristics, because all characteristics are absent. Because it is the realm of the wisdom of noble ones, it is the ultimate truth, because it is the realm of supreme wisdom. Because it is the cause of the Dharma of noble ones, it is the Dharmadhatu, because all the Dharmas of noble ones arise by focusing on it. Here, the meaning of dhatu is the meaning of cause. How should one know the various distinctions of emptiness? That is, "completely liberated from all afflictions," which is its various distinctions. When is one completely liberated from all afflictions? When is one pure? That is, with defilements and without defilements. When is there defilement, at that time all afflictions exist. When is defilement abandoned, at that time it is pure. If it becomes defiled and also becomes undefiled, then it is a changing dharma, how can it not change into impermanence? It is like this: the water element, gold, and space, etc., are thought to be as pure as purity. For those who are free from sudden defilements, their nature does not become other. Furthermore, the various distinctions are these sixteen emptinesses, namely, inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-outer emptiness, great emptiness, emptiness of emptiness, ultimate emptiness, conditioned emptiness, unconditioned emptiness, emptiness beyond extremes, emptiness without beginning or end, emptiness without abandonment, self-nature emptiness, all dharma emptiness, self-characteristic emptiness, non-entity emptiness, and non-entity self-nature emptiness. Know that these are all in brief. The food that can be eaten and its body, and the emptiness that is the basis of the dwelling. And who sees it in what way? For what reason is it also emptiness? In order to obtain the two virtues, always benefit sentient beings.
