This is the commentary on the first chapter, entitled "Chapter on Characteristics." Acting under the influence of obscurations: "Pervasive, partial, and remaining, Equal, taking, and abandoning, Are shown as the two obscurations." Thus it is said. Among them, the pervasive is the obscuration of afflictions and knowledge of those of the Bodhisattva lineage, because it obscures everything. The partial is the obscuration of afflictions of those of the Hearer lineage and so on. The remaining is the obscuration of those very ones, that is, the obscuration of actions such as desire. The equal is the obscuration of those who act equally. The obscuration of taking and abandoning cyclic existence is the obscuration of those of the Bodhisattva lineage, because it obscures the non-abiding Nirvana. Thus, these are shown as the obscurations of those of the Bodhisattva lineage, those of the Hearer lineage and so on, and both, as appropriate. Furthermore, the nature of afflictions is ninefold. The bonds of attachment are obscurations. The nine bonds of attachment are the obscurations of afflictions. To what do they obscure what? "Disgust and equanimity, And that alone is seeing, The bonds of attachment to attachment, Obscure all disgust." The bond of attachment of anger obscures equanimity, because it cannot bring about equanimity towards the basis of anger towards the disagreeable. The remaining ones are seeing that alone. How is it? Those are, in order, "The view of the aggregates and its basis, Cessation, path, and the Jewel, Gain and respect, And stinginess of possessions, are all-knowing, Are obscurations." The bond of attachment of pride obscures the complete knowledge of the view of the aggregates, because at the time of direct realization, due to the arising of pride with and without interruption, it has not been abandoned. The bond of attachment of ignorance obscures the complete knowledge of the basis of the view of the aggregates, because it does not completely know the aggregates that are closely taken. The bond of attachment of view obscures the complete knowledge of the truth of cessation, because the two views of the aggregates and clinging to extremes fear it and

Because one slanders it with wrong views. The pervasive attachment of clinging to what is supreme obstructs the complete understanding of the truth of the path, because one clings to the purity of what is supreme in other ways. The pervasive attachment of doubt obstructs the complete understanding of the Three Jewels, because one does not have faith in their qualities. The pervasive attachment of jealousy obstructs the complete understanding of gain and respect, because one does not see their faults. The pervasive attachment of miserliness obstructs the complete understanding of frugal use of possessions, because one is particularly attached to possessions. Other than the ten virtues and so forth, the obstructions to the ten aspects of virtue and so forth should be understood as other. What is that obstruction? What are the virtues and so forth? No practice and not a place of birth, not generated by yoga, no birth and no attention, the accumulation is not complete, not possessing lineage and spiritual friends, the mind is completely sorrowful, and also not possessing diligence, associating with evil people, From one's own three bad states, the remaining wisdom is not mature, and by nature is a bad state, laziness and also selflessness, attachment to existence and enjoyment, the mind has become dejected, not believing and not liking, examining like a sound, not greatly valuing the sacred Dharma, having malice towards gain and no compassion, lacking in hearing and being little, not having cultivated samadhi. These are obstructions. What are virtues and so forth? Virtue and enlightenment are truly held, intelligent, without error, without obstruction, dedication and without fear, without miserliness, power is virtue and so forth. Thus it is said. For these virtues and so forth, how many obstructions are there to each one that should be known? Their obstructions, it should be known that there are three each. Thus it is said. The three obstructions to virtue are no practice, practice on non-birthplaces, and improper practice. The three obstructions to enlightenment are not generating virtue, not paying attention, and not completing the accumulation. Truly holding is generating the mind of enlightenment, its three obstructions are lineage and not
