The cause of craving is feeling; by thoroughly examining it, one enters the truth of origination. The basis of manifest attachment to self is the mind; by thoroughly examining it, one enters the truth of cessation, because there is no fear of suspecting the annihilation of self. By thoroughly examining the Dharma, one enters the truth of the path, because there is no confusion about all defiled and purified dharmas. Therefore, in order to enter the four truths, one must first establish the practice of mindfulness. After that, practice right exertion. Thus, if one fully knows all aspects of unfavorable and favorable factors, the four aspects of diligence will arise in order to eliminate them. By practicing mindfulness, one fully knows all unfavorable and favorable factors. In order to clarify unfavorable factors and generate favorable factors, the four aspects of diligence arise, that is, in order to eliminate the sins and unwholesome dharmas that have arisen, and so on, it is widely said. Abiding therein, the very ability to act, all meanings will be accomplished. The five faults, the eight applications, arise from the cause of dependence. In order to eliminate that, initiating diligence, the very ability to abide in that mind is the four legs of miraculous power, because it is the cause of accomplishing all meanings. Abiding refers to the abiding of the mind here, which should be understood as samadhi. Therefore, after right exertion comes the legs of miraculous power. That ability to act is also known to arise from the cause of practicing the eight applications in order to eliminate the five faults. What are those five faults? It is said: Laziness and instructions, forgetfulness and sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults. Among them, sinking and excitement are combined into one fault. If one does not apply effort when sinking and excitement should be pacified, it is a fault. When it is time to be pacified, it is application. In order to eliminate them, how are the eight applications established? There are four for eliminating laziness: aspiration, effort, faith, and pliancy. Those also

I should know in order, namely, the place and that which abides therein, and the cause and the result themselves. The place of effort is aspiration. Abiding is effort. The cause of abiding aspiration is faith, because once convinced, intention manifests. The result of abiding effort is extreme proficiency, because by initiating diligence, the distinction of samadhi is attained. The remaining four applications of abandonment are mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity, which are respectively the antidotes to the four faults. They should also be known in order, namely, mindfulness and so on. Not forgetting the object, realizing sinking and excitement, abandoning them and manifesting action, abiding calmly when pacified. Mindfulness is not forgetting the object. Awareness is, once the object is not forgotten, realizing sinking and excitement. Having realized, manifesting action in order to separate from them is attention. When sinking and excitement are pacified, abiding calmly is making the mind equanimous. Beneath the feet of miraculous power are the faculties, namely faith and so on. How are they arranged from among them? Having generated that which is in accordance with the aspect of liberation, aspiration and combination are mastery, not forgetting the object, and non-distraction are also distinguished. One strives to be called a master. Having generated the mind's fitness for the feet of miraculous power and the roots of virtue in accordance with the aspect of liberation, aspiration is mastery, combination is mastery, forgetting on the object is mastery, non-distraction is mastery, and complete distinction is also mastery. The five faculties, such as faith, should be known in order. Those very things, such as faith, when they become endowed with strength, are called the powers, because their opposing aspects are weak. When are they powerful? That is, when those very things are not mixed with opposing aspects such as non-faith. Why are faith and so on shown sequentially? Thus, the result of the former is the latter. Because of having faith in cause and effect, one initiates diligence towards the result. By initiating diligence, mindfulness is established. Mindfulness is established.
