Through the gate of transcendence and examination, all conditioned phenomena are thoroughly established as momentary. In order to thoroughly prove the absence of self in a person, there are twelve verses that distinguish the absence of self: The person is merely nominally designated, Its meaning is not a substance. If one does not understand with a reversed mind, As well as pervasive afflictions and the cause of afflictions. Because of these two faults, this is not one or different. Clinging to the aggregates as self, and that as a substance. If it exists as a substance but cannot be expressed, Then it should be said what its necessity is. If it is said that neither one nor different can be expressed, Then it is unreasonable, because there must be a necessity. Because nature and the world are visible, And also known through the door of treatises. Like firewood and fire, the two, Cannot be expressed, but are visible. Both exist, because consciousness arises, It is not a cause, because it is meaningless. Therefore, from the seer to the liberated one, They do not change. If it is said that it is the only lord, Then it would be impermanent, unwanted, uncreated. It should establish its own nature, And it harms the three complete enlightenments. Because of the three faults, in the seer and so on, Its action is not self-born. That action also depends on conditions, But the seer and so on have no action. Because it is not an agent, because it is impermanent, Because it always engages simultaneously. The action of the seer and so on, Should not be self-born. Likewise, abiding and destruction, And previously non-existent and impermanent. There is also no third category, Therefore, it should not be a condition. Thus, all phenomena, In the ultimate meaning of selflessness, If one clings to emptiness as self, Then it is only a statement of fault. The difference between pervasive afflictions and purification, The difference of states of severance, And the difference of engagement and continuity, Are all shown by the person. One should not generate the view of self, Habituation is without beginning. If there is a person, then everything Becomes effortless liberation or no liberation. Should one say that the person exists, or does not exist? Answer: The person is merely nominally designated, Its meaning is not a substance. Thus, because the person is nominally designated and exists, but is not a substance, it should be said in this way. Therefore, it is not a self-contradictory statement.

If one completely clings to saying, it will not even become a near opportunity for non-existence, nor is it existence itself. Furthermore, how is it known that it is not substantial? Because it is not perceived. It is not perceived as substantial, like form and so on. If 'perceiving' means understanding with consciousness, then a person is not something that those who speak of persons cannot understand with consciousness. Moreover, the Blessed One also said, 'Only to the seen dharma does one cling and bind as self.' How then is it not perceived? The answer is that perceiving it in that way is not perceiving it as substantial. Why? Because it is inverted. For example, the Blessed One said that regarding non-self as self is inverted. Therefore, whatever clings to a person in that way is inverted. How is this understood? Because it is completely afflicted. For example, 'I' and 'mine' are completely afflicted by the nature of the affliction of the view of the aggregates. What is not inverted is not suitable to become completely afflicted. How is it known that it is completely afflicted? Because it is the cause of affliction. For example, afflictions such as desire arise with it as their cause. Furthermore, regarding form and so on as the basis upon which a person is designated, should the person and form and so on be said to be the same, or should they be said to be different? The answer is: From this, it is known that it cannot be said to be one or different. Why? Because of two faults. What are the two faults? The aggregates would become self, and it would become substantial. If they were the same, then the aggregates would also become self, and the person would become substantial. If they were different, then the person would become substantially existent. Thus, because the person exists by imputation, it is reasonable that it cannot be spoken of. Therefore, it is also established that it is an inexpressible phenomenon. To those who transgress the teacher's teachings and believe that the person is substantially existent, one should say this: If you say that substantial existence
