That is the concluding word. If it has occurred and still exists at a later time, then it undoubtedly needs a cause. If there is no cause, it is because there was no cause from the beginning. However, it is also unreasonable to think that it exists solely by that cause, because it has already been used as a cause. No other cause can be found either. Therefore, we should recognize that, without a doubt, each moment has a previous cause. In that way, something that has arisen cannot exist without interruption until another time. If someone thinks like this: that which has arisen, for the sake of which a cause is needed, but arising does not mean that it is arising, but rather that it will cease at a later time, and not just arising itself, then what will cause it to cease later? If it is said that it is solely because of the cause of arising, that is also unreasonable. Why? Because arising and ceasing are contradictory. The causes of contradictory things cannot be the same, just like shadows and sunlight, cold and warmth. Ceasing at another time is also contradictory. Contradictory to what? It contradicts the teachings of the Blessed One, who said, "Monks, all these formations are like illusions, arising and decaying, existing for a time, dwelling briefly." It also contradicts the attention of yogis, because when they pay attention to the arising and ceasing of formations, they see these things ceasing in each moment. If it is not like that, they will only see ceasing at the time of death. If it is not like that, then other situations like seeing ceasing at the time of death will not cause them to develop renunciation, detachment, and liberation. Furthermore, if a formation that has arisen remains for another time, and remains through itself or some cause of existence, then first of all, it is unreasonable for it to remain through itself. Why? Because it will not exist itself later. What is the reason that it cannot exist? Because it does not exist, it is also unreasonable for it to remain through a cause of existence, because that cause cannot be found at all. However, even if there is no cause of existence, it will exist because there is no cause of destruction, until it meets with a cause of destruction.
