Reliance, transcendence of the world, causing to ripen, and mastery. These four qualities are taught from the perspective of virtue. And what is mastery? It should be understood as inexhaustible through the pacification of the aggregates, because it is also inexhaustible in nirvana without remainder of aggregates. Verses on expressing refuge: This is the commitment with a genuine desire, which should also be understood from compassion. From that arises omniscience, benefiting and bringing happiness, without weariness in difficulties. It can manifest, all vehicles rely on it, constantly possessing qualities. Understanding expression and the nature of reality, this refuge of the wise is supreme. This explains the nature of refuge, its cause, result, action, possession, and distinctions. Committing with the desire for Buddhahood is the nature of refuge. It should be understood from compassion, which is the cause. From that arises omniscience, which is the result. Benefiting and bringing happiness to sentient beings, without being weary of hardships, is the action. Possessing the qualities that can manifest, which all vehicles rely on, is the possession. Understanding expression and what is attained through the nature of reality, with the characteristics of skillful distinction through the differences of coarse and subtle, is the distinction. Verses on the special qualities of refuge: Taking refuge here is of great significance, it is the increase of an immeasurable collection of qualities. This practice is pervaded by the thought of compassion, and also makes the unequaled, great Dharma victorious. Here, the great significance of taking refuge is shown by accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others. Accomplishing one's own benefit is due to the increase of immeasurable qualities. The nature of immeasurability should be understood from the immeasurability of reason, number, and time. The increase of qualities cannot be measured by reason, nor by number. Because it is constant, it is also not measured by time. Accomplishing the benefit of others, from the aspect of intention, is due to being pervaded by compassion. And the practice of

Through this gateway, the Mahayana Dharma is propagated, because the Mahayana is the Dharma of the great noble ones. The chapter on taking refuge is complete. Verses summarizing the detailed classification of lineages: Existence, excellence, and characteristics, signs and detailed classification of lineages, faults and benefits, and two types of examples, totaling four. This summarizes the categories of existence, excellence, characteristics, signs, detailed classification, faults, benefits, and examples of lineages. These distinctions also each have four aspects. Verses classifying existence: Because the realms, aspirations, and practices are different, and because of the difference in fruits and the object of focus, it is definitely stated that lineages exist. Because sentient beings have diverse realms, the classification of realms is immeasurable, as stated in the Varu Ra Sutra. Therefore, such classifications of realms should be believed, so the lineages of the three vehicles are distinct. The aspirations of sentient beings are also different, because initially, they only develop aspirations for certain vehicles. This would not be the case without the difference in lineages. Even if aspirations are generated due to the power of conditions, the practices are still different, some strive to practice, while others do not. This also indicates the existence of lineage differences. The different fruits, namely inferior, intermediate, and superior enlightenment, are also distinct, because the fruit corresponds to the nature of the seed, so the difference in lineages exists. Verses classifying excellence: Because of the reasons that their roots of virtue are particularly excellent, are all-encompassing, are of great significance, and are inexhaustible, they are called excellent lineages. Here, the lineage demonstrates its excellence for four reasons: that lineage is the reason why the roots of virtue are particularly excellent, are all-encompassing, are of great significance, and are inexhaustible. The roots of virtue of the Shravakas are not cultivated in that way. Nor are they all-encompassing, because they lack powers and fearlessness, etc. Nor is it of great significance, because there is no benefit for others.

Ro! It is not endlessly many, but for the sake of ultimately attaining nirvana without remainder. Verses distinguishing characteristics: Nature and growth, That is the support and the supported, Existence and non-existence, and qualities, Should be known for the sake of liberation. This shows four types of lineage, Namely, abiding in nature, Truly accomplished, The nature of the support, And the nature of the supported, These are just as they are, in order. That exists in the object of cause. It does not exist in the object of effect. Lineage should also be understood as the meaning of liberating qualities, Because from this, qualities are liberated and arise. Verses distinguishing signs: Before application, compassion, Faith and patience, Virtuous and correct conduct, Should be known as signs of lineage. The signs of a Bodhisattva's lineage are fourfold, Namely, from before application, compassion for sentient beings, Faith in the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, Patience with the meaning of not caring about difficult practices, And truly practicing the virtue of the nature of the perfections. Verses distinguishing the divisions: Lineage is definite and indefinite, Circumstances cannot take away, And can take away, in short, lineage, This distinction is fourfold. Lineage, in short, is fourfold, Namely, definite and indefinite, These are just as they are, in order, Circumstances cannot take away, And can take away. Verses distinguishing faults: Habitual afflictions and bad friends, Poverty and the freedom of others, In short, the faults of lineage, Should be known as fourfold. The faults of a Bodhisattva's lineage, Namely, by which one abides in lineage, but does not enter into qualities, In short, there are four, Namely, increased afflictions, bad friends, Poverty of resources, And becoming the freedom of others. Verses distinguishing benefits: In a long time, Going and quickly liberating, There also experiencing little suffering, Maturing sentient beings with sorrow. A Bodhisattva's lineage has four benefits, Namely, in a long time.
