Acting with compassion is the fruit of becoming a man. The cause of desire is the fruit of ripening. The giving of essence is the fruit of the same cause, for in the future, the fruit will be given with particularly excellent compassion. Thus, relying on the five aspects of compassion, one should know that becoming a Buddha is not far off. Verses on not dwelling in samsara and nirvana: Compassion, supreme wisdom, belonging to samsara, the nature of suffering, all and non-self, having fully understood, one does not become weary, nor is one greatly harmed by faults. Bodhisattvas, having fully and truly understood all that belongs to samsara, do not become weary because they possess compassion. Because they possess supreme wisdom, they are not harmed by faults. Thus, they do not dwell in nirvana, nor do they remain in samsara, in that order. Verses on fully understanding samsara: Seeing the world as the nature of suffering, possessing love, that suffering and, the means of completely abandoning it are also truly known, causing discouragement, one does not become weary. That is also truly known, it is said, that is, suffering is truly as it is, by which one can reduce that suffering, and one also knows the means of completely abandoning that suffering. That which causes discouragement is compassion. This shows that the Bodhisattva truly knows the suffering of samsara and the means of completely abandoning it, but because of the excellence of compassion, he does not become weary. Two verses on the detailed classification of compassion: The nature of compassion, this love, nature and individual observation, that which has been previously practiced and possessed, and the decline of incompatible qualities, the attainment of purity, are the four. This is in order, with the distinction of lineage, qualities, and the complete observation of faults, and the complete practice in other lifetimes, and the attainment of the door of detachment, one should know that if one abandons the incompatible qualities, damage, then purity is attained, thus this

It is achieved through attaining detachment from desire. It is not through equality and constancy, nor through superior intention. Detachment from desire is achieved through practice, and love that arises without an object is not love. Likewise, without love, there is no enlightenment. Among these, equality refers to the happiness of beings, etc., recognizing that whatever is slightly felt is suffering here. Constancy refers to the fact that even in nirvana without the residue of aggregates, it does not diminish. Superior intention refers to those who have entered the grounds, because they have attained the intention of equality between self and others. Through practice means completely turning away from suffering. Detachment from desire means abandoning various harms that are incompatible with it. Without an object means attaining tolerance of the unborn dharma. There are five verses that compare compassion to a tree: Compassion, patience, and thought, aspiration arises to fully ripen beings. The first is the root, the last possesses the supreme fruit, this is the great tree of compassion. This should be understood as the tree of compassion in the stages of root, trunk, branch, leaf, flower, and fruit. Its root is compassion, its trunk is patience, its branches are thinking of the benefit of beings, its leaves are aspiring to good rebirths, its flower is a good rebirth, and its fruit is fully ripening beings. If the root lacks compassion, the endurance of asceticism will not change. If the wise cannot endure suffering, there will be no thought for the benefit of beings. Wisdom separated from thought will not sow the seeds of aspiration in pure white rebirths. If good rebirth is not attained, it will not fully ripen beings. These two verses explain that the latter arises from the former, and because it is in accordance with the Dharma, compassion, etc., are established as root, etc. The water of compassion is loving-kindness, it brings happiness in suffering. With vast and proper attention, the branches grow extensively, the continuity of aspiration is not interrupted, the two conditions of abandoning and taking are accomplished, therefore the flower and fruit are meaningful.
