For example, when the Soga festival arrives, people bind themselves with bathing cloths and play in the water with their respective ornaments and intimate objects. Then, someone places a sapphire of noble lineage into the water. After that, in order to obtain that sapphire, they all put down their ornaments and enter the water. Then, they grab the gravel or shells that are there, thinking they are gems, thinking, "I have found a gem," and take them out. After taking them out, when they look at the edge of the pond, they strongly realize that this is not a gem. The water of the pond also appears to be like the light of a gem due to the power of the gem. They also strongly develop a good perception of the water that appears in that way, thinking, "Oh, it's a gem!" Then, one who is skilled in means and has a kind heart finds that gem just as it is. Monks, similarly, you who do not understand the true meaning of the Dharma like a gem, all of you who cling to everything as impermanent, everything as suffering, everything as selfless, everything as impure, all of you who meditate, meditate repeatedly, and approach through repeated meditation, it is all meaningless. Monks, therefore, you should not change like the gravel and shells in those ponds, you should be skilled in means. Monks, all of you who cling to everything as impermanent, everything as suffering, everything as selfless, everything as impure, all of you who meditate, meditate repeatedly, and approach through repeated meditation, for all of that, permanence, happiness, self, and purity exist, starting from the detailed establishment of the true nature of the Dharma, the perversion that is shown should be understood as in the Sutra. Therefore, the mind being distracted from emptiness, for a Bodhisattva who has newly entered the Mahayana, in the manner of emptiness, is said to be one who has fallen away from the Tathagatagarbha. Those who think that the nature of existing things is later interrupted and destroyed, that is Nirvana, desiring the door of liberation of emptiness in order to destroy things, or those who think that there is something to be realized,

The emptiness to be meditated upon refers to relying on emptiness by focusing on emptiness, believing that there exists something different from form and so on. Among them, what is the Tathagatagarbha spoken of in the manner of emptiness? "Here, there is nothing to be removed, nor is there anything to be established. Look at reality as it is, and be liberated upon seeing reality. Characterized by distinctions, the realm is empty of adventitious defilements. Characterized by non-distinction, it is not empty of the supreme Dharma." What does this indicate? Because the Tathagatagarbha, which is naturally pure, has no reason to remove the causes of pervasive afflictions, and being free from adventitious stains is its nature. There is also nothing to be established with the reason of being purified, because the Dharma of non-distinction, the Dharma nature of purity, is its nature. Therefore, the Tathagatagarbha is empty of all that can be distinguished and separated, the shells of afflictions, and is not empty of the inconceivable Buddha Dharma that cannot be distinguished, cannot be separated, and surpasses the sands of the Ganges. Thus, for something that does not exist in a certain place, it is definitely recognized as emptiness, and for what remains, it is known to be constantly present there, knowing it as it truly is. These two verses, in order to be free from the extremes of addition and slander, show the characteristic of non-inverted emptiness. Among them, if someone's mind wanders and scatters outward from this way of emptiness, unable to abide equally, unable to become one-pointed, then those people are said to have a mind scattered from emptiness. Among them, without the wisdom of ultimate emptiness, one cannot realize the pure realm of non-conceptualization, nor can one practice it directly. Considering this, it is said that the wisdom of the Tathagatagarbha is the emptiness wisdom of the Tathagatas, and the Tathagatagarbha is also the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas.
