The Buddha's eye sees the nature of its own Dharma, and the compassion that abides in the unobstructed afterlife, frees us from all obscurations. Just as the unpleasant lotus closes and passes away in bliss, like seeing the divine eye within it and cutting off its petals. Beholding beings with the essence of complete Buddhahood obscured by the sheath of defilements such as attachment and hatred, the compassionate Sage destroys those obscurations in the same way. Afflictions are like insects and bees, and the Tathagatagarbha is like honey. Just as honey surrounded by swarms of creatures, a wise person seeking that purpose, having seen it, uses skillful means to completely separate those creatures and so on. With the great balance of the all-knowing eye, having seen this seed-essence realm that is like honey, its obscuration, which is like bees, is completely and utterly abandoned. Just as honey is obscured by billions and trillions of creatures, a person seeking honey removes those bees and does the work of honey as they wish. Likewise, the uncontaminated wisdom that beings possess is like the essence of honey, like the victorious being who is skilled at destroying afflictions, which are like bees. Afflictions are like the outer husk, and the Tathagatagarbha is like the inner essence. Just as the essence of a grain with a husk cannot be enjoyed by people, whoever seeks food and other purposes, they extract that which is in the husk. Likewise, the defilements of afflictions that beings possess, even the Victorious One, as long as they are not liberated from the defilements of afflictions, the Victorious One does not act in the three realms. Just as the essence of rice, buckwheat, or earth-born grains, not separated from the husk and coarse, not well-sifted, cannot be used by people, cannot become delicious food. Likewise, the Dharma's dominion that beings possess, not liberated from the husk of afflictions, cannot give the taste of Dharma's joy to beings afflicted by afflictions. Afflictions are like an impure place of filth, and the Tathagatagarbha is like gold. Just as a person's precious gold, falling into a filthy and rotten place.

The indestructible Dharma-nature dwells there in that way. It remains for many hundreds of years. The deity with the pure divine eye sees it there. Having seen it, he says to the person, "Here is gold. Purify this supreme jewel with jewels. Do what is to be accomplished." Likewise, the Able One sees the qualities of sentient beings who are like the impure and are sunk in afflictions. In order to purify that mud of afflictions, he pours the rain of the sacred Dharma upon all beings. Just as a god sees gold fallen into filth and decay, and earnestly shows the most beautiful thing to people in order to make everyone happy, so the Victorious One sees the complete Buddha jewel fallen into the great impurity of afflictions. Seeing sentient beings, he teaches the Dharma to embodied beings in order to purify them. Afflictions are like the bottom of the earth, and the Tathāgatagarbha is like a treasure of jewels. Just as in the house of a poor person, there is an inexhaustible treasure underground, but that person does not know it, and the treasure does not say to him, "I am here," so the treasure of jewels is contained within the mind. Because they have not realized the stainless wisdom and the deathless Dharma-nature, beings constantly experience the suffering of poverty in many ways. Just as one does not say to a person in whose poor house a treasure of jewels is contained, "There is a treasure of jewels," because that person does not know it, so sentient beings who dwell in the house of the mind, the treasure of Dharma, are like the poor. In order for them to obtain it, a righteous sage is born into the world. Afflictions are like the husk of a pod, and the Tathāgatagarbha is like the sprout of a seed. Just as the indestructible Dharma, the seed and sprout that are present in fruits such as mangoes, grows into the substance of a king of trees through the presence of tilled soil, water, and so forth, so the virtuous element of the Dharmadhātu, which is contained within the skin-pod of the fruits of ignorance and so forth of sentient beings, gradually becomes the substance of a king of the Able Ones by relying on that virtue. Just as a tree grows from the gaps in the fruit pods of palmyra and mango trees through the conditions of water, sunlight, wind, earth, season, and space, so the afflictions of sentient beings...
