Although acting, they are not stained by the faults of afflictions. These are the afflictions that are in accordance with the roots of virtue. Furthermore, it is said: "World Honored One, when does one hear about the roots of virtue? And for what reason is it called affliction?" He replied: "Ocean of Intelligence, it is like this: Bodhisattvas always act in the three realms with these afflictions of such nature. However, the three realms also arise from all afflictions. Therefore, Bodhisattvas are skilled in all dharmas, and because of the power of the roots of virtue, they deliberately act in the three realms. Therefore, it is called afflictions that are in accordance with the roots of virtue. They always act in the three realms, but their minds are not stained by afflictions. Ocean of Intelligence, for example, a merchant or householder has a single son who is loved, cherished, and pleasing, and there is nothing displeasing about him. However, that boy, being a child, falls into a pit of impurity while playing. Then, the boy's mother and two relatives see the boy fall into the pit of impurity. Having seen this, they cry out loudly, lament, and wail, but they do not enter the pit of impurity to rescue the boy. Then, the boy's father goes to that place and sees his only son fall into the pit of impurity. Having seen this, he quickly and urgently, driven by the desire to rescue his only son, enters the impure place without disgust and rescues his only son. Ocean of Intelligence, it is like this. This is an analogy made to understand this meaning. If you ask what the meaning is, Ocean of Intelligence, the so-called pit of impurity is another name for the three realms. The so-called only son is another name for sentient beings. Bodhisattvas abide with the thought of treating all sentient beings as their only son. The so-called mother and relatives refer to those who see sentient beings fallen into samsara and lament and wail, but have no ability to rescue them. These are the words of the individuals of the Hearer and Solitary Buddha vehicles.

Homage. Merchant or great householder refers to those bodhisattvas who possess a pure and undefiled mind, free from defilements, directly realize the unconditioned Dharma, and consciously take birth in the three realms in order to fully ripen sentient beings. It is a supreme term. Ocean of Intelligence, although completely liberated from all rebirths, taking rebirth in samsara, whatever rebirth is taken, this is the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas. Because it is upheld by the wisdom that is expert in all things, it is not harmed even by all the defilements, and in order to liberate all the bonds of defilements, it also teaches the Dharma to sentient beings, as it is said. Therefore, this passage of scripture reveals that for the sake of benefiting others, the powerful Bodhisattva consciously connects with rebirth through the power of the two, roots of virtue and compassion, and through the power of the two, skillful means and wisdom, makes it free from all defilements, thereby revealing the boundary between impurity and purity. Therefore, after the Bodhisattva has obtained the vision of the unoriginated and unmanifested Tathāgatagarbha as it is, having thus attained the Dharma-nature of the Bodhisattva, one should understand the sūtra as it is said. As it is said: Ocean of Intelligence, look upon all dharmas as being without essence, without a maker, without an owner, without sentient beings, without life, without a person, and without a self. Do not think in this way according to whatever you desire, do not completely cling to it. Ocean of Intelligence, the Bodhisattva who has faith in this unchanging Dharma does not generate anger towards any Dharma. There is nothing that can benefit or harm this, and in this way, his vision of wisdom will become completely pure. Thus, having fully understood the Dharma-nature of all dharmas as it is, one does not abandon the armor of great compassion. Ocean of Intelligence, for example, an invaluable jewel, a vaidurya jewel,

An extremely immaculate object is placed in mud and remains there for thousands of years. After a thousand years have passed, it is taken out of the mud, cleansed and wiped, properly washed, properly cleansed, and properly wiped. Then, its pure and immaculate essence as a precious jewel is not abandoned. Similarly, a bodhisattva, like the ocean of wisdom, thoroughly knows that the minds of sentient beings are naturally luminous. However, they are seen as afflicted by sudden, proximate afflictions. The bodhisattva thinks thus: These afflictions do not enter into the luminous nature of the minds of sentient beings. These afflictions are sudden and arise from unreal conceptualizations. I am capable of teaching the Dharma to pacify the proximate afflictions of these sentient beings. Thus, he does not develop a timid mind. He repeatedly generates a superior intention towards sentient beings. He also thinks thus: These afflictions have no power or strength whatsoever. These afflictions are powerless, weak, and have no real basis. These afflictions are unreal conceptualizations, and if examined with proper and accurate mindfulness, they will not cause anger. He should examine them separately, thinking, 'I will not connect with them in any way.' It is good not to connect with afflictions, but connecting is not good. If I connect with afflictions, how can I teach the Dharma to sentient beings bound by the bonds of affliction so that they abandon the bonds of affliction? However, I will not connect with afflictions, and I will teach the Dharma to sentient beings so that they abandon the bonds of affliction. He thinks thus: 'Whatever afflictions cause the continuation of samsara and are similar and related to virtuous roots, I will connect with them in order to fully mature sentient beings.' Thus it is said. Samsara here refers to the three bodies that are the nature of mind, images of the three realms in the uncontaminated sphere.
