There are four obstacles to attainment. What are these four? They are the characteristics of condition, the characteristics of cause, the characteristics of arising, and the characteristics of ceasing. Among these, the characteristic of condition is due to the habitual tendencies of ignorance, just as actions are related to ignorance. The characteristic of cause is the uncontaminated action that has the condition of the ground of the habitual tendencies of ignorance, just as actions. The characteristic of arising is the accomplishment of the three forms of the mind-made body, which has the condition of the ground of the habitual tendencies of ignorance and the cause of uncontaminated action, just as the manifest accomplishment of the three realms of existence, which has the condition of the four kinds of grasping and the cause of contaminated action. The characteristic of ceasing is the death that is the inconceivable transformation, which has the condition of the accomplishment of the three forms of the mind-made body, just as aging and death, which have the condition of birth. Thus, Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have attained power do not attain the ultimate perfection of purity because they have not abandoned the habitual tendencies of ignorance, which are the basis of all the near afflictions, and because they possess all the habitual tendencies of the defilements and stains of affliction. Because of the habitual tendencies of ignorance, they engage in subtle activities of conceptual proliferation based on that very thing, and therefore they do not attain the extremely unconditioned perfection of quiescence. Thus, because the aggregates of the mind-made nature arise based on the uncontaminated action that is completely aroused by the subtle activities of conceptual proliferation, which has the ground of the habitual tendencies of ignorance and the condition of the ground of the habitual tendencies of ignorance, they do not attain the perfection of extreme bliss, which is the cessation of that. Thus, as long as the Tathagatagarbha, which is the result of the complete cessation of all the afflictions, actions, and contaminated births, has not manifested, they do not attain the perfection of permanence, which is unchanging, because they are inseparable from death, which possesses inconceivable transformation. Thus, the habitual tendencies of ignorance are like the complete contamination of affliction. The manifest performance of uncontaminated action is like the complete contamination of action.

It is also like afflictions. The three kinds of mind-made bodies manifest and accomplish, and the death-transference that possesses inconceivable complete transformation is also like the all-afflictive nature of birth. This treatise should also be understood extensively, like the Sutra Pitaka. For example, just as the Blessed One, through the condition of grasping, arises from the cause of contaminated karma, and the three realms of existence arise, similarly, the Blessed One, through the condition of the ground of ignorance-habit, arises from the cause of uncontaminated karma, and the three kinds of mind-made bodies of Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have attained power arise. The Blessed One, through the habit of ignorance, causes these three kinds of mind-made bodies to arise in these three, and it is the condition for the manifestation and accomplishment of uncontaminated karma, as is extensively explained. Because these three mind-made bodies of Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have attained power do not possess the perfection of purity, self, happiness, and permanence, therefore, only the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata is called the perfection of permanence, the perfection of happiness, the perfection of self, and the perfection of purity. That is pure because of its nature, and pure because of abandoning habits. Abandoning the elaboration of self and non-self, pacification is the excellent self. The aggregates of the mind-made body, and happiness because its cause is reversed. Samsara and Nirvana, permanent because of realizing equality. In short, through two causes, the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata should be known as the perfection of purity, the common characteristic is complete purity by nature, and the special characteristic is immaculate complete purity. Through two causes, it should be known as the perfection of self, because it is free from the extreme of non-Buddhists, free from the elaboration of self, and because it has abandoned the extreme of the Hearers, free from the elaboration of non-self. Through two causes, it should be known as the perfection of happiness, because it has abandoned all aspects of the arising of suffering, destroyed the connection of habits, and suffering.
