According to this, the objects of mistaken consciousnesses such as the appearance of two moons are not their own characteristics, so they will also become non-pervasive. The characteristics and objects of ear consciousness and so on should also be understood by following this. The nature of mind consciousness can be good, non-good, and so on, as appropriate. The characteristic is that the lord's condition depends on the mind and appears as the aspect of the object. The mind is also the one that has just passed away from the six. Whatever consciousness is, that is the mind. Or, the previous moment of its own kind. The object here is the general characteristic of phenomena included in the three times, including conditioned and unconditioned phenomena. It is also explained that what arises from being close is focused on its own characteristics, but it is not established by valid cognition. Furthermore, some people believe that due to the power of the mind's habituation, the meaning of its own characteristics will appear clearly. Those who accept the existence of external objects believe this, but in reality it is not so, as has been explained before. The functions and corresponding co-existences of these consciousnesses, as described in the Abhidharma teachings, are in accordance with the Sutra Pitaka and other treatises, elaborating on the establishment of conventional truth. Here, however, we focus on the meaning and only explain the ultimate truth, so we will not elaborate. Furthermore, the nature of the alaya consciousness is obscured and not declared, and its characteristic is that it becomes the seed of all consciousnesses. As it is said in the Dense Array Ornament: All seeds are in the alaya, All consciousnesses also abide therein. The seven consciousnesses all arise from the alaya, and exist interdependently. Therefore, when the seven consciousnesses cease, the habitual tendencies that can generate their own kind in the future are all imprinted on the alaya. Therefore, it is also called the habitual tendency of homogeneous cause, and it is also called the habitual tendency of appearing and differentiating various consciousnesses. Because it possesses the habitual tendencies of appearing as the duality of grasper and grasped, it is called the habitual tendency of the two graspers, and so on. There are many different explanations of this in the scriptures. It is unreasonable for the seven consciousnesses to be the basis for imprinting habitual tendencies on each other or on themselves, because the continuum is unstable, which would lead to the seeds being wasted, such as

Just as entrusting wealth to an unreliable person results in waste, so it is. The ālaya is continuous, thus avoiding such faults. Furthermore, the ālaya itself is also called the Vipāka-vijñāna (resultant consciousness), because the Vipāka arises from defiled virtuous and non-virtuous actions. It arises after the cause and time have been interrupted by other factors, is gathered by the continuum of sentient beings, and its nature is unexpressed, as explained in the treatises. Furthermore, it is also called the Ādāna-vijñāna (appropriating consciousness), as it is said in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, because it grasps and takes hold of this body. The Tathāgatagarbha (Buddha-nature) will also be taught in this very Sūtra, and is also mentioned in other Sūtras such as the Nirvana Sūtra, and will be explained when the time is right. Its object of focus will be explained later. Those who accept the extinction of lineage at the time of cessation believe that there is no time of cessation for such a person, because there is no ultimate end to future lives. Its unreasonableness will be shown later. Therefore, here, in terms of seeds and maturation, first, seeds are of two types: defiled seeds and undefiled seeds. Among them, defiled seeds are also of two types: the first is the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, which cease at the time of the arising of the path of seeing; the second is what is to be abandoned by cultivation, which also ceases at the time of the ultimate attainment of cultivation. Undefiled seeds cannot cease, because even in the state of Buddhahood, it remains the basis of undefiled dharmas, like a mirror-like wisdom that has continuity. As it is said: 'Mirror-like wisdom does not waver, the three wisdoms rely on it.' etc. Furthermore, as the basis of these seeds, the nature of awareness that is the essence of the ālaya is uninterrupted, because the nature of awareness is able to continuously generate subsequent fruits, which is now proven by experience. Therefore, 'For the cause that is without defect, what fruit can cause it to cease?' This is cessation itself.
