The nature of conditioned phenomena, as stated by the venerable Nagarjuna, is also the three characteristics of arising, abiding, and ceasing. The explanation of four characteristics in the Treasury of Knowledge is another system, so there is no fault of contradiction. Here, cause is the cause of its own kind and is related to many effects. Nature here refers to the nature of the various consciousnesses previously explained, which, in short, is the nature of awareness. Thus, nature itself or an object possessing nature is also called nature. Why, although continuity is included in nature, are they divided into two? Because its particular difference is another reverse aspect. "Great wisdom," and so forth, are explained in detail from the perspective of divisions, and so on. Among these, the first way of dividing is the coarse or clear functioning of consciousness. If divided according to its basis, there are three types: the nature of functioning, the nature of action, and the nature of lineage. The first is the functioning of the five sense consciousnesses on their respective objects. The second is mental consciousness, which, as explained in the Abhidharma, arises from proximity, is a seeker, and is a determiner. Here, there are only two: seeking and determining. It either initiates all actions manifested in body and speech, or it places the imprints of all consciousnesses on the alaya consciousness, or it determines that things are thus and not otherwise, and is therefore called the nature of action. Furthermore, the nature of action is also the imprints existing on the alaya consciousness that have become its action. The third is the basis of the previous two, the alaya consciousness, which is called the nature of lineage because it is the cause of the same kind as the previous two. If so, is it not said in the Mahayana scriptures that there are eight consciousnesses? If divided in detail from the perspective of quantity, then in addition to these consciousnesses, there is also a defiled mind, making eight consciousnesses. Now, I will briefly explain the individual characteristics of each of the consciousnesses. First, the individual nature of the five sense consciousnesses is unspecified, and each

From its definition, the definition of eye consciousness is: relying on the eye sense organ as the owner's condition, it clearly perceives the appearance of form. If so, then for mental factors that are similar to it, it would be too broad, wouldn't it? There is no fault. Because mental factors are not essentially different from consciousness, but belong to the particularity of consciousness itself. Just as the definition of a cow is having a dewlap and other characteristics, but it will not be too broad to cover cows entering a yellow meadow. The reason why consciousness and mental factors are not essentially different will also be explained later. If asked: What is the eye sense organ itself? Here, the so-called "colored sense organ, like an Utpala flower" and so on are speculations by various schools, but in reality, they are not established. However, what is called the eye sense organ is the appearance or the difference in ability that depends on it, which is the nature of consciousness. How is it established? It is established through direct perception, or through the reason that "even if all three conditions are met, sometimes it cannot be seen," it can be inferred that in addition to the three conditions, there is some difference in the ability to generate eye consciousness in this part called the eye, which is known through reasoning. As stated in the Pramāṇavārttika. It becomes the owner's condition because it projects and enters in the direction of appearing as the object of consciousness, and when other conditions are met, it follows and stops with the opening and closing of the eyes, so it can produce eye consciousness. As stated in the rational treatises: "The immediate condition can produce eye consciousness, making it the nature of awareness, while the sense organ can produce the ability to grasp the object." and so on. Here, the object refers to the moment of the present form, etc., which is its own characteristic, as stated in the Abhidharma, which is in accordance with the tenets of the Śrāvakayāna school. But such an object is not actually established. However, what appears as form is the nature of consciousness, which is called the object of eye consciousness. It is said: From its own seed, whatever appearance of consciousness arises, these are its birthplace, the Buddha said that there are two forms. Furthermore, before
