the teachings, and in order to build stupas in various places, for the sake of the merit of sentient beings, and to pacify plagues and the like, the Buddha traveled to various places. It is said. Furthermore, by teaching in this way, although the differences in time were shown earlier in the phrase "Thus I have heard," if they are not represented by something that has temporality, it will be like floating in the sky, and it will be impossible to grasp with certainty. Therefore, it is to grasp with certainty "Thus I have heard" at the time when the Thus-gone One dwells in such a place. Here, the meaning of "bhagavan" has two aspects: destroying or possessing. According to the former, in the sense of destroying the four maras, it is "Bhagavan," that is, the aggregates mara, the afflictions mara, the son of the gods mara, and the death mara. These also, in turn, obstruct the attainment of nirvana without remainder, nirvana with remainder, the attainment of special qualities, and long life, so they are called maras. The first of these is the ripened body and so forth, which serves as the basis of suffering. It obstructs the attainment of nirvana without remainder, because the aggregates produced by previous karma and afflictions are no longer the basis of suffering, and the afflictions that produce other such aggregates in the future have also been abandoned. The reason why the Thus-gone One destroyed these maras is that "The Buddhas are the Dharmakaya," and "There are no bones or blood in the body," etc., because it is the body of wisdom. The afflictions mara are the root and near-root afflictions such as desire, which also obstruct the attainment of nirvana with remainder, because the afflictions that produce other aggregates have been abandoned. Destroying such a mara is because the afflictions, including their imprints, have been abandoned by the vajra-like samadhi. The son of the gods mara is the gods of the Paranirmitavasavartin realm, such as Delightful Lord of Power, who generate attachment to objects and so forth, and thus obstruct the attainment of special qualities. Destroying these

The meaning of knowing is subduing the maras at dusk under the Bodhi tree at Vajrasana, and so on. The mara of the Lord of Death is dying untimely due to internal or external causes, which also obstructs longevity. The reason why the Tathagata subdued them is that sometimes, Garab Wangchuk (དགའ་རབ་དབང་ཕྱུག) requested the Tathagata to enter into Nirvana for my sake. Then the Tathagata said to Ananda, I have repeatedly practiced and meditated on the samadhi of the miraculous feet, and I am able to remain for a kalpa or more than a kalpa. For the sake of Garab Wangchuk, shall I enter Nirvana? What should I do? Therefore, the Tathagata obtained longevity. On the other hand, it is the all-pervasive affliction of afflictions, that is, the nature of greed and so on that has not been pacified, and the all-pervasive affliction of karma, that is, the defiled karma of good and non-good, and the all-pervasive affliction of birth, that is, the defiled aggregates that manifest depending on the former two. These three are: the first eight and nine are afflictions, the second and tenth are karma, and the rest are birth. As it is said, it belongs to the twelve links of dependent origination, that is, these are subdued. In addition, there are the obscuration of affliction and the obscuration of knowledge, that is, the non-afflictive ignorance, the discriminating thoughts of grasping and so on are subdued. In short, because all unfavorable factors are subdued, it is called Bhagavan. Thus, in the Yoga Tantra, the Glorious Vajra Peak, it is said: Afflictions, karma, and likewise birth, afflictions, the obscuration of knowledge as well, all unfavorable dharmas, because he subdued them, he is called Bhagavan. As it is said. Furthermore, in the Sutra of the Passing into Nirvana, it is also said: Because he has subdued all afflictions, he is called Bhagavan, because he possesses all virtuous dharmas, and because he is extremely skilled in the meaning of all dharmas, he possesses great qualities, therefore he is invincible by others. And so on is also said. Furthermore, in the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati, it is said: Therefore, by individually understanding the illusory dharmas, he subdued the mara of the aggregates. Emptiness.
