It is finished. As it says, "How is form?" and so on, do not regard it as the self-nature of the Dharma. The characteristic of form is that it is destructible and able to be destroyed. For example, drawing blood with malicious intent, and so on. Shape, that is, the body, like a banyan tree with a wide water surface, and so on, and the forms of color, and so on, do not cling to them. This meaning has also been stated in other sutras, and has been explained before. Therefore, as it says, "Therefore," and so on, it summarizes the meaning of the present. As it says, "Lord of Lanka," and so on, it is teaching about the self-nature of worldly dharmas. The actions of sentient beings are the phenomena of the mind's appearance. These are like the images in a wall painting, although there is no high or low, they appear as high and low. "Worldly existence" refers to the world composed of the five aggregates, existing in a conventional way. This is actually without the movement of thought. Therefore, the actions and activities of body and speech aroused by it, which are examined by outsiders, are the subject of proof. The author is dominated by others, possesses actions himself, and is mainly closely connected with the thing to be proved. For example, when an ax performs the act of cutting a tree, the author is dominated by others, possesses the act of leaping upwards and falling downwards himself, and is mainly combined with the thing to be proved, which is to turn the tree into pieces. Furthermore, although the Buddhas are free from such actions, they consider dependent origination, in which something is certain to arise after something else, to be the ultimate truth, and therefore they are also free from such actions. As it says, "For this," and so on, it shows an example of the same aspect. Similarly, there is no seer or seen, and so on. If so, then they should not appear in valid cognition, as it says, "Worldly existence," and so on, know that. As it says, "Lord of Lanka," and so on, it shows the benefit of understanding the meaning of the teachings. Other sutras also say that seeing nothing at all is seeing Suchness. What is seen other than that is a reversed conceptualization, and it also distinguishes between the grasper and the grasped. For example, like images, and so on.

When there is no place and no material object to place it, like that, similarly, for all phenomena such as form, grasping the appearance of self is called extreme grasping. Because one does not recognize that this is a reversed appearance, one grasps the external different nature, thereby distinguishing between Dharma and non-Dharma. The so-called "shadow of my body" refers to the appearance of a body's shadow on those differences of light. Although it is an unobstructed body, children grasp it as such. The so-called "other" refers to other meanings similar to those. The so-called "not used for abandonment" means that, as previously shown, one does not recognize those as emptiness with the wisdom of higher seeing and practice meditation. The words "practice" and so on indicate that one practices the opposite characteristics, that is, one explains the other, or belongs to synonyms. This is because the Tathagata has attained the wisdom of correctly knowing each Dharma, so he can teach through many names of one meaning. The necessity of doing so is that among the disciples who are close at that time, some are dull and distracted, while others are the opposite. Therefore, by teaching with synonyms of different names, even those who are dull and distracted can grasp any word and thus play a role. And those who are sharp and not distracted will also develop reverence because they recognize that this is what the Tathagata said. If only one word is spoken, some people will not be able to understand, and even if many synonyms are spoken, some people will become disrespectful. For treatises of this nature, what will be taught from below should also be understood in this way. Utterly pacified means abandoning reversal. The scripture that teaches in this way is a scripture with a single meaning, that is, a sutra of definitive meaning. Relying on it, through the sequence of hearing and thinking wisdom, one can enter the Tathagatagarbha, which is the end of knowledge. The commentary on the Holy Lankavatara Sutra, "The Ornament of the Tathagatagarbha," the chapter on praying by calling companions, is the explanation of the first chapter.
