According to the proponents of the Existence school, what needs to be established is the non-affirming negation that negates the appearance of forms and so on as being different from the mind. If that is the case, then simultaneous perception is certain, just as the perceived appearance is certainly perceived simultaneously with the mind, so too, the mind must be perceived simultaneously with the perceived appearance, as previously explained. Therefore, the mind also becomes merely a non-affirming negation that negates being different from the perceived appearance. Thus, mind-only is not a valid entity. If it is not so, then this reason becomes extremely uncertain, which is very clear. Furthermore, even if it is refuted that appearances are different from the mind, it does not refute that there is an external entity apart from that. For example, when the appearance of an ordinary mind appears in the wisdom of omniscience, although such an appearance is not different from wisdom, it cannot refute that the ordinary mind-stream is different from wisdom. It is like that. If it is said that consciousness is established by its own self-awareness, and that the distinctness of mind-streams is also established by the direct perception of others by yogis, and also by inference by ordinary people, then that is the case in conventional truth, but in ultimate truth, self-awareness itself is not valid, and it will be explained when the time comes. Thus, since there is no proof and there is refutation, mind itself as a truly existent entity in the ultimate sense is not valid. It is also said in the Sutra of Holding the Root of Virtue: "In truth, consciousness does not abide within the body, nor is it possible outside the body. For all phenomena, at all times, consciousness is not possible, and the place and non-place of this consciousness, as well as its movement, are not known." And so on, it is extensively explained. In the Ornament of the Dense Array Sutra, after explaining mind-only, it also says: "There is no such thing as mindlessness, there is no measure or measurement." And so on. In the Twin Sutra, it is also said: "Son of the gods, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva know all phenomena to be like space? Son of the gods, the three realms are only mind, and that mind is formless, invisible, unobstructed, and not distinguishable, like an illusion."

Just like a flame, the mind, even when fully sought with the nature of mind, cannot be found. The mind that fully seeks the mind with which it seeks cannot be found either. Because that mind is unfindable, it is said that all phenomena are unfindable, and so on. Similarly, the root sutras appear to be numerous, but I will not write them due to the fear of extensive texts. If that is the case, as previously shown, the three realms are only mind, and in other sutras as well, it is said: The world is painted by the mind; the mind does not see the mind. Virtuous or non-virtuous actions are accumulated by the mind. The mind revolves like a torch, the mind wanders like a horse, the mind burns like a forest fire, the mind grows like a great river. And so on. Also, in this very sutra, if it contradicts the teaching that mind-only is substantial, there is no fault, because those are taught with the conventional truth in mind. As it is said in those very sutras, "The mind does not see the mind." These statements should be understood by following the Ornament of Clear Realization, etc., as previously explained. The meaning taught in this very sutra will be explained when the occasion arises. Therefore, the meaning summarized here is this: external objects do not exist even in conventionality, and all appearances are only mind. And what is the nature of mind? In conventionality, it is only experiencing and knowing, because it follows all minds and is not present in others, just like the heat of fire. Faith, desire, and so on, are temporary states of mind because they are only occasionally apprehended, just like the turbidity of water, and so on. As it is said in the Noble Inconceivable Appearance Sutra, the boy asked: Why do you need so many conceptual thoughts? The nature of mind is clear light, and afflictions do not arise in it, nor does space become afflicted. The Bhagavan replied: Just as you said, the mind is always clear light, but due to sudden afflictions, individual ordinary beings become afflicted. So it is said. In this very sutra, it is also said: The nature of mind is clear, and it is the mind that makes it turbid.
