Therefore, (you) have cast far away the doubt of "whether the words of the Tathagata will be distorted." The teachers also said that the Tathagata had permitted that the holy Dharma could be compiled in this way as before, so there is no such fault. If the Tathagata himself compiled it, then the statement "Thus I have said" and so on, according to reason, should not have the statement "Thus I have heard," if such a question is raised. There is no fault, as before, when appearing as a body different from oneself for the sake of taming sentient beings, that statement is reasonable, but not "Thus I have said," because not being omniscient, others will not have faith in the teachings. If that is the case, then in other 《Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra》, when the Buddha shows the aspect of nirvana, the venerable Ānanda was enveloped by clouds of sorrow. The venerable Mahākāśyapa comforted Ānanda, dispelled his sorrow, and said, 'You should not be so sad. The time for the Tathagata to pass into nirvana has arrived, he will dwell today, but not tomorrow. You should request these four requests as I have said.' And so on. The last of the four requests is that after the Tathagata passes into nirvana, when compiling the Dharma treasury, the words "Thus" and so on should be added to the beginning of all sutras. As an answer to this request, the Buddha said, 'Ānanda, according to your request, after the Tathagata passes into nirvana, at the beginning of compiling the Dharma treasury, the words "Thus I have heard, at one time, the Bhagavan was dwelling in such and such a place, together with the fourfold retinue, and expounded this sutra" and so on should be added.' This contradicts (what you said), because in that sutra, it is clearly said that the venerable Ānanda is the compiler. There is no fault, because the names Ānanda and Kāśyapa seem to be confused with each other. For example, in the introduction to the 《Extensive Prajñāpāramitā》 and the 《Intermediate Prajñāpāramitā》, only one person is mentioned, that is, the venerable Ānanda. And in the introduction to the 《Condensed Eight Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā》, only one person is mentioned, that is, the venerable Ānanda, and others.

Moreover, in the Sutra of Nirvana itself, it is said, "My brother, Ananda." In other sutras, it is said, "Younger brother Ananda." Therefore, do not be attached to the name here. If you follow the meaning, then the one who appears as the compiler is the one who is known in the world as the paternal uncle of the Tathagata, because he appears to possess the qualities of great learning, and so on. In the definitive sense, it is as previously stated. Thus, the explanation of the introduction arranged by the compiler should be understood through five aspects: the necessary meaning of arranging the words, the summarized meaning, the meaning of the words, refutation and the answer to the refutation, and the way of connecting. As it is said, "One who wishes to speak of the meaning of the sutra should explain it with necessity, summarized meaning, word meaning, refutation and answer, and connection." This is because it is said in the reasoning of explanation. Here, the necessary meaning is threefold: generally, the necessity of arranging the introduction of perfect nature, the necessity of speaking in well-composed Sanskrit, and the necessity of the specific phrase "I have heard." Among these, the first necessary meaning is that Acharya Dignaga explains that the compiler himself is established as a trustworthy person, and having been so established, others will enter the sutras compiled by him. Its meaning is that at some time, in that particular place, together with these retinues, I heard this sutra from the Tathagata, thus, by indicating the retinue of sense faculties and so on, it will be certain that what he said is true. Furthermore, here, it seems that Acharya Vimalamitra is refuting, but this is not reasonable, because if that were the case, future disciples who cannot ask the retinue of sense faculties whether those things are true or not will not recognize the compiler as a trustworthy person, and for that very reason, they will not enter the sutras compiled by him, so understanding the meaning is unreasonable. Moreover, in the introduction where the names of the retinue are not mentioned,
