On the left and right, one sees the cliffs of the hells of sentient beings, and then one sees oneself returning without dismay or shrinking back. The omen of the eighth bhumi is seeing on both shoulders the king of wild animals, a lion with a mane, wearing a crest, causing all small wild animals to be afraid and staying still. The omen of the ninth bhumi is seeing a universal monarch, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of billions of people, facing forward, and holding a white umbrella adorned with various jewels above his head. The omen of the tenth bhumi is seeing the body of the Tathagata, its color like gold, radiating a fathom of light, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of billions of Brahmas, facing forward and teaching the Dharma, and so on. Furthermore, in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, the Blessed One said: "Avalokiteśvara, it should be known that these are gathered by four kinds of purity and eleven branches. Avalokiteśvara, the first bhumi is gathered by the purity of intention. The second bhumi is by the purity of higher discipline. The third bhumi is by the purity of higher mind. From the fourth bhumi up to the Buddha bhumi, it should be known that it is gathered by the purity of higher wisdom, which is increasingly superior and extremely excellent. In other sutras, it is said that the fourth bhumi is especially endowed with the wisdom of knowing the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the fifth bhumi is especially endowed with the wisdom of realizing the four truths, the sixth bhumi is especially endowed with the wisdom of realizing the meaning of profound dependent origination, the seventh bhumi has no characteristics and is with effort, and the eighth bhumi and above have no characteristics and are without effort. In the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* also, it is shown in this way by the power of meaning. What are the eleven branches? Avalokiteśvara, in the stage of application of aspiration, the bodhisattva cultivates the ten practices of Dharma with extreme aspiration, and therefore, with patience, transcends that stage and enters the flawless reality of the bodhisattva. Even so, it is perfected by that branch.

Because one cannot consciously practice when subtle faults and errors frequently occur, that limb is not fully complete. By striving to fully complete that limb, it can be attained. Even if that limb is fully complete, one cannot abide in the complete worldly samadhi, nor can one attain the complete Dharani of hearing. Therefore, that limb is not fully complete. By striving to fully complete that limb, it can be attained. Even if that limb is fully complete, one cannot dwell extensively in the Dharma that accords with the aspects of enlightenment that have been attained, nor can one relinquish the mind from the craving for absorption and the craving for Dharma. Therefore, that limb is not fully complete. By striving to fully complete that limb, it can be attained. Even if that limb is fully complete, one cannot cultivate the Dharma that accords with the aspects of enlightenment, which are fully grasped by skillful means, by relinquishing the various practices of the truths, and by not being biased towards one side of samsara and nirvana, and by abandoning the mind that is manifestly biased. Therefore, that limb is not fully complete. By striving to fully complete that limb, it can be attained. Even if that limb is fully complete, one cannot directly perceive the arising of conditioned phenomena as they are, and be greatly protected from them, nor can one dwell extensively in the signless mind. Therefore, that limb is not fully complete. By striving to fully complete that limb, it can be attained. Even if that limb is fully complete, one cannot continuously and uninterruptedly dwell extensively in the signless mind. Therefore, that limb is not fully complete. By striving to fully complete that limb, it can be attained. Even if that limb is fully complete, one cannot relinquish the effort of abiding in the signless, nor can one gain mastery over signs. Therefore, that limb is not fully complete. By striving to fully complete that limb, that
