Regarding the term "wisdom," the ground is the discriminating wisdom. The reason for distinguishing the first ground and so on from such a continuous entry is that, as before, it is obtained by abandoning those incompatible aspects, as well as the distinction of complete purification in the later stages, and on which ground, which and which aspects of qualities are mainly possessed, and through definitive words and so on. Among these, the distinction of complete purification should be understood from the Noble Perfection of Wisdom and the Buddha's Debate Sutra. The definitive word comes from the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: The first ground is called the Extremely Joyful Ground because it obtains a mind that is of great significance, previously unfamiliar, and transcendent, and because great joy and supreme joy arise extensively. The second ground is called the Immaculate Ground because it is free from all stains of subtle downfalls and immoral discipline. The third ground is called the Illuminating Ground because that samādhi and the dhāraṇī of hearing are the place of knowing immeasurable appearances. The fourth ground is called the Flaming Ground because the light of the fire of wisdom shines forth as one burns the wood of afflictions and cultivates the dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment. The fifth ground is called the Very Difficult to Subdue Ground because it is difficult to control oneself by cultivating those very dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment through skillful means. The sixth ground is called the Manifest Ground because the entry of formations becomes manifest, and because contemplating the signless becomes manifest. The seventh ground is called the Far-Reaching Ground because contemplating the signless is uninterrupted and continuously followed for a long time, and because it is connected with the pure ground. The eighth ground is called the Immovable Ground because the signless is naturally accomplished, and because it is not moved by the arising of afflictions of signs. The ninth ground is called the Good Intelligence Ground because in all aspects, one obtains extremely vast intelligence that is unimpeded in the power of teaching the Dharma. The tenth ground is called the Cloud of Dharma Ground because the body of bad states is like the sky, and it is pervaded and covered by clouds like great assemblies of Dharma.

The eleventh is called the Buddha-bhūmi because it has abandoned the extremely subtle obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, is without attachment or obstruction, and fully manifests all aspects of knowledge for the sake of attaining complete enlightenment. Furthermore, the *Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra* states that the tenth bhūmi is called the Dharma-megha because the dharmakāya is like the sky, filled with clouds of great wisdom. Also, in that same text, it says: 'Son of good family, the bodhisattva who abides on the first bhūmi is the pāramitā of generosity.' From there, in order, up to the tenth bhūmi, it is said that they master the six pāramitās, as well as the pāramitās of skillful means, aspiration, strength, and wisdom. Each of these is predominantly present in its respective bhūmi. Other sūtras state: 'The bodhisattva who abides on the first bhūmi primarily cultivates the pāramitā of generosity, but does not fail to cultivate the others as much as possible.' And so forth. Furthermore, in the noble *Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra*, it says: The preliminary sign of the first bodhisattva-bhūmi is seeing the trichiliocosm filled with hundreds of thousands of billions of treasures. The preliminary sign of the second bhūmi is seeing the entire trichiliocosm become like the palm of one's hand, adorned with hundreds of thousands of billions of jewels. The preliminary sign of the third bhūmi is seeing oneself as brave, holding a strong weapon, and subduing all external enemies. The preliminary sign of the fourth bhūmi is seeing four wind maṇḍalas blowing from the four directions, scattering various flowers on the great earth maṇḍala that possesses everything. The preliminary sign of the fifth bhūmi is seeing a garland of campaka flowers placed on the head of a woman adorned with all ornaments. The preliminary sign of the sixth bhūmi is seeing a pond with four steps, covered with golden sand, clear and unpolluted, filled with water possessing eight qualities, and adorned with utpala (उत्पल, *utpala*, blue lotus), kumuda (कुमुद, *kumuda*, white water lily), and white lotus flowers, and seeing oneself delighting and enjoying oneself in it. The preliminary sign of the seventh bhūmi is seeing the four directions
