It means that for those with sharp faculties, enlightenment can be attained by simultaneously revealing the profound truth; for those with dull faculties, it is necessary to gradually reveal the stages such as the selflessness of the individual in order to attain enlightenment. Therefore, whether directly or indirectly, the ultimate meaning to be realized is the single truth of the union of wisdom and emptiness. The saying, "The formless realm has eight aspects, and the distinctions of meditative absorption have six aspects," refers to the four aspects included in the causal equipoise, and the four aspects belonging to the arising of fruition, thus totaling eight. From the perspective of meditative absorption, there are the preparatory stage, the special meditative absorption, and the four actualities such as the faculties, thus totaling six. Among these, the four meditative absorptions of childish play mentioned earlier are included within the special meditative absorption. The saying, "For the sons of the self-enlightened ones, arising occurs in seven ways," refers to the fact that the self-enlightened ones also ultimately emulate the lineage of the Buddha, and are therefore called sons. The path by which they arise from liberation into nirvana is sevenfold, namely the path of accumulation, the four aspects of the path of joining that lead to definite emergence, and the paths of seeing and cultivation, thus totaling seven. The saying, "The three times, past, present, and future, also do not exist," and so on, reveals the suchness of all those things that are explained by distinguishing individuals and so on, that is, all those things encompassed by the three times do not exist in ultimate truth. If so, since they are appearances, are they shown to be the nature of mind? The answer is that it has already been said, "Apart from the appearance of mind," and so on. Furthermore, the emanation Buddha entering the womb of his mother, being born from the womb, turning the wheel of Dharma, becoming weary of birth, old age, sickness, and death and renouncing the household life, and before these, abiding in the Tushita heaven in the form of the holy white banner, and appearing to go to other Buddha-fields, these are not true. Furthermore, the appearance of moving from Vulture Peak and other places to each other, traveling in cities, going to the beings, teaching the Dharma that will tame them, and finally passing into nirvana in the city of Kushinagar (modern Kushinagar, India).
