The reason for entering and departing from samsara is that this is also the reason for entering by the power of things themselves. If one asks, how is the reason for entering and departing from samsara established for children? It is like this, sentient beings constantly take different rebirths, and merely departing from these rebirths is not the true meaning of entering and departing from samsara. Even in the present state, the continuum of karma and afflictions continues uninterruptedly, but by cultivating antidotes such as loving-kindness and compassion, and by generating wisdom that realizes selflessness in the mind, and by familiarizing oneself with this continuum, then the previous afflictions and so on will naturally cease, which everyone can experience. Therefore, this itself is entering and departing from samsara. The general meaning here is that afflictions such as attachment and aversion, as well as the manifestation and clarity of loving-kindness and so on, and the wisdom that realizes selflessness, are established through familiarity with one's own reasoning, or through some familiar seeds that have been previously experienced. This principle has been explained before. Therefore, the continuum of afflictions such as attachment and aversion, and the continuum of unwholesome thoughts arising from them, exists, while the continuum of loving-kindness and so on, and the wisdom that realizes selflessness, is able to arise, and this initial beginning must be that some alaya-consciousness that is in accordance with the mind that possesses the seeds capable of producing these has previously existed. Because sometimes there are intervals, and so on, these should be understood following what has been explained before. If one asks, here, the collection of the six consciousnesses itself becomes its cause, then there is no reason to establish the alaya-consciousness, Answer: There is no fault. Because the collection of the six consciousnesses, like sound and wind and so on, is very unstable, it is not suitable as a basis for sowing the seeds of loving-kindness and so on. If that were the case, the seeds themselves would also change, so it is impossible to produce such a result. Therefore, relying on the pure state of liberation from samsara being established, the establishment of the alaya-consciousness actually means liberation from all the dharmas of samsara and the attainment of nirvana, and how will it be again...

One should follow and realize it. Just as many fires are established as having the nature of being hot and burning, so realizing its nature is, as previously shown, the function of a single valid cognition. Moreover, entering into samsara is when the continuity of the previous antidote has ceased, and the continuity of afflictions such as attachment and aversion has arisen. The very beginning of that continuity, as previously shown, is different from the consciousness of entering, so it is said that some mind-stream endowed with all obscurations has previously occurred. One should follow what was previously shown and realize it. Furthermore, the manner of entering into samsara, the relationship between actions and their results, and the previous and subsequent lives, as previously shown, are established by the power of valid cognition. Therefore, from some of the continuity of actions and afflictions accumulated in the previous life, the present aggregates are established together with afflictions such as attachment and aversion. Such a thing is either the habit of one's own kind, or some seed of habit that has previously occurred. However, the manifestation of habit is occasional and not necessarily always present. And the previous habit has also perished, so it is not reasonable to be the cause. Therefore, such a seed has previously occurred, and the basis of the seed cannot reasonably be other than the ālaya, so it is established by the power of valid cognition. Furthermore, afflictions such as attachment and aversion, and the non-virtuous thoughts aroused by them, are eliminated by the category of antidotes such as loving-kindness, which is also established by valid cognition. And the antidote must also enter and arise in the continuum that should be abandoned together with it. Thus, the arising of the antidote is also not reasonable at the time when what should be abandoned has previously occurred, because of their contradiction. Just as a cold touch does not enter a place pervaded by a hot touch. Moreover, even if what should be abandoned and the seed are destroyed together, the antidote will become meaningless. Therefore, the antidote enters into the continuum that arises together with the seed, and the basis of the seed cannot reasonably be other than the ālaya, so it is established by the power of valid cognition. Here, others say that the ālaya-consciousness exists because of arising from the three samādhis, etc., which is an inference that relies on scripture.
