Firstly, the six consciousnesses belonging to one's own continuum are not suitable as its cause because they cease to exist. Secondly, the previous dharma also perishes when it produces its result, therefore it is not suitable as a cause. This is (the meaning of the above view). If it is thought that the afflicted mind can be its cause, that is not reasonable. Because it is said in the scriptures: it relies on the ālaya-vijñāna and its object is that. If that is established, then the ālaya-vijñāna is also established. If it is recognized that there is another mind that has the seeds to generate manifest consciousness, then it has the characteristics of ālaya-vijñāna, so it is the ālaya-vijñāna itself, and the name can be given in any way. Secondly, the mind included in other continuums is also not suitable as its cause. If it itself is the cause, then in states such as fainting, the six consciousnesses should not cease, because its cause is not incomplete. However, if it is only admitted that it is also a condition, then there is no harm to the current topic of discussion, because it also acts as a condition for manifest consciousness. Moreover, that kind of mind that belongs to one's own continuum and has seeds has also been established as existing previously. This is also a nature hetu that needs to be established through reasoning. The previous teachers thought that because it arises after cessation, there is ālaya-vijñāna, and they either thought that this was a reasoning based on scripture or a perception, but this is only the fault of not understanding. Furthermore, here the way to apply reasoning is: taking the continuum of aggregates of us as the subject, for it, there is a mind with seeds other than manifest consciousness, because the six consciousnesses arise and cease with it. Among them, arising and ceasing are as mentioned before, in states such as fainting, the previous continuum ceases, and when waking up from fainting, it arises again. The pervasion here should be understood as mentioned before. Another way to apply it is: for the subject of the continuum of aggregates of us, there is a mind that has all the seeds.
